The Midnight #2 (Midnight Bass Practice)

By Tomatron.Jones on February 1, 2026 11:32 am

I had to cram to finish this week's beat since my usual beat-making day is going to be with band recording. I've been annotating kick patterns from some recent drum edits so I can match bass to kick when I record for the band tomorrow.  I took some kick patterns from one of the songs that I had been practicing to and built a track around it - recorded some bassline to match the kick, then layered a bunch more samples from The Midnight Splice sample pack. The kicks and snares and other percussion sounds, and the synths, and sax were all samples. The the real bass (and not a synth bass), it turns out to be a sort of a 'city pop' vibe with the Midnight samples. Kinda fun. I also kept it kinda minimal, both due to limited time and trying to rollback on the extreme maximalist production and automation.

* American P-Bass recorded through Scarlet Focusrite 4i4
* Kick, snare, percussion, synth, sax samples all from The Midnight splice sample pack
* Ample use of Transit, Valhalla, RC-20 plugins
* Gullfoss and Ozone Elements for mastering

Total time: 2 hours 15 minutes

Thanks! Yeah, The Midnight is definitely in the synthwave scene, so their sample pack is very synthwavey. I like that the 'organic' bass sound I recorded makes for a slightly different feel than the pulsey synth bass common to synthwave. I think it's called 'city pop', a Japanese genre of synth-based pop that synthwave is partially inspired by?

That bass is infectious, makes me want to hop around, and i really love the nightime-in-the-city feel of it all, too. Such evocative work, mixed with great skill! heart

This night is a good night.

Woah, thank you! Yes, the The Midnight, a few of whose samples I used, are very much that night time in the city vibe!
