Hard #4 / Binaural #1

I just discovered the artist Paul Sabin and his 'Stalk 2' album / soundtrack. This track started off originally as a 'downtempo' electronica inspired by him, namely the tracks '711' and 'Open'. They are slower, heavier, 'trancier', pulsey tracks. The main aspects I focused on were heavy kick and bass, simple arps or melodies, and cinematic piano. While I added some of those elements, I failed to achieve a similar mood, I fell into my old habits of being too maximal, adding too many melodic elements (and not enough textural elements), which I even started removing some of right before submitting.

I also used this track as an opportunity to experiment with a Binaural / spatial audio plugin, the SPAT Max 4 Live bundle for Ableton Live. I use this for a handful of synths, having them orbit and move around the listener spatially beyond just simple panning left and right. Ultimately, I'm not particular happy with this since I failed to achieve the 'mood', and instead just fell into old habits, but that's okay, it's all a learning experience.

More binaurl tracks soon.

* Ableton's bass and piano instruments
* Helm synth plugin for bass and chords
* Samples from Splice - kick, snares, percussion, texture
* Max 4 Live 'SPAT' for spatial / binaural audio
* Ample use of Transit, Trackspacer plugins
* Gullfoss and Ozone for mastering

Total Time: 6 hours (too long!)

Forgot I was listening to WB and not a regular playlist. Good progression and vibe. Its so tempting to add too much. Last night I was working on a track that had 2 concurrent arps running but neither had prominence in the mix. They just hid behind the wall of supersaws I had, only giving a rhythmic texture. I actually like that you've got a bit going on in the track. That cut down at 2min is more dramatic since the buildup was so layered. It may not be the mood you were looking for, but it was certainly a mood.

Thank you! That's a great reminder - the 'arps' can be rhythmic and textural rather than melodic elements.
