5+7 Mathrocktronica

By Tomatron.Jones on March 8, 2026 10:54 pm

I found a guitar riff loop I had recorded in an old Ableton project and decided to turn it into a full arrangement. The riff is in the form of a 5+7 as 12/8 compounder meter, or just a 6/8 with some interrupts. Or whatever. So it's kinda 'mathy' or whatever, with a 4/4 drum breakdown in the middle Added some drums, bass, synth. It got a little busy and I wish I had more time to clean it up but I definitely need to submit it in the next 10 minutes. The synths on the guitar with a bit-crushed chip-tunes quality give it an 'electronica' component. Perhaps I have invented 'mathrocktronica'.

* Drums from Ableton stock drum + samples from Splice
* Gibson SG guitar recorded through Scarlet 4i4
* Synths from Ableton Wavetable
* Bass synth from Ableton instruments + Moog SubPhatty
* Gullfoss and Ozone Elements 10 for mastering

Great harmony and timing! smile  Must be a lot of fun to do.

This rocks! Great guitar & drum sound, I love the quirky time sig and how you build up the layers. The switch from guitar rock to synth heaven and back is awesome!

Thanks! Actually it was pretty fun, despite running out of time and it kinda getting away from me a bit, ha.

Thanks! Yeah, it was fun doing the drums on that 5+7=12 riff. I had a vague idea to make it even more intricate, like a 5+5+6+7 or something silly, but kept it just repeating the 5+7. Maybe next time, ha.

this is awesome, the math carries it well
