Drums First, Questions Later

By theemeraldruby on February 18, 2024 11:56 am

It's the 3rd week of Samples club and I am feeling the strain of working outside of my "box of familiar music tools"

The challenge I set myself for this track was to write the drums first, then everything else. I recorded a bunch of samples to sound design into a drum kit - The bass drum is my footsteps in the hallway, the snare is my cat (Her name is fish) eating the microphone and the high-hat/cymbal is the squeaky knob on my vintage dresser. While I love the "drum kit esq" sounds I achieved, using non-standard kit sounds made it harder for me as a non-drummer/baby producer to find the groove.

Samples used:
Footsteps
Cat eating mic
Squeaky Door knob
Percussion Box
Steel Drum

Nice one.

Yeah with drums as my "first" instrument, It happens quite a bit that I start a track with drums. I really like the different choices of samples, this is well done.

this is so rad, i love the groove you found

who knew that a cat eating a mic could sound so groovy smile good stuff!

WOW. Excellent work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've tried a similar technique on previous weekly beats but never achieved this level of musicality. Blown away! It's not a flute, but I love it anyway!!!!

Well done!

I've sampled this track under the CC Attribution Share Alike (BY-SA) license for my upcoming track “ α - β - γ - δ - ε - ζ - η - θ - ι - κ - λ - μ - ν - ξ - ο - π - ο - ξ - ν - μ - λ - κ - ι - θ - η - ζ - ε - δ - γ - β - α”.

If I am to re-sample “α - β - γ - δ - ε - ζ - η - θ - ι - κ - λ - μ - ν - ξ - ο - π - ο - ξ - ν - μ - λ - κ - ι - θ - η - ζ - ε - δ - γ - β - α” again for future work, I will just put the attribution in the new track, as not to spam the comment field of this track with more than one comment, that is; unless you request me to also put it here again.

Sampled again for the 6th (and, most likely, final) time for next week track “phase 1”, concluding Q1.

This week's “alpha ⋰ omega ⋱ alpha” is a more compact iteration.

Thanks for your inspiring sound!
