Brevity

This week I wanted to experiment with my own vocals. I recently bought a Shure SM57 and tried to put it to good use. I opted for a pretty generic beat and just two chords, kept it pretty simple so that I could fuss more with vocals without everything feeling too complicated.

Sketched out the idea on the M8, with synth sounds coming from the Hydrasynth. Then imported the stems into GarageBand and worked mostly in the DAW (trying to get more comfortable with a hybrid workflow). I'm really into vocals like Tame Impala and Sound of Ceres, a kind of airy but punchy psychedelic vibe--used that as a good starting point. I'm still figuring out how to mix everything properly, maybe there is too much compression on the vocals? I don't know. But this has been a good learning experience.

Lyrics:

One day at a time

Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes

As if it never happened as a sign
I really need your care and redesign
And you can tell I'm fakin' fine
I think I'll take it one day at a time

It's inevitable this
Is inevitable this
Is inevitable this
Is inevitable this

Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes
Change is how the way it goes

As if it never happened as a sign
I really need your care and redesign
And you can tell I'm fakin' fine
I think I'll take it one day at a time

One day at a time

It's inevitable this
Is inevitable this
Is inevitable this
Is inevitable

It always amazes me when people fully commit to produce stuff in garage band! There's something about limitations that drives creativity up!
I think you really honored your references! Amazing! Congratulations!

Reminds me of Washed Out a bit too. It’s really good. I’m not exactly listening on massive monitors right now, but the mix sounds super clear to me. Your vocals punch through and the rest is just sitting in a nice pocket.

So many nice polished in here. Album worthy

You definitely nailed the Tame Impala feel, I'm really loving the airy reverb-laced vocals here!
I'm not sure I agree with you about this being a super generic beat - this sounds like its perfectly paired for the main star of the show, which are the vocals.
Fantastic work, as always!!!

This sounds next level to me! Super chill and your vocals sound amazing. Inspiring work!

This is a jam.  Great vibe.  I don't think the vocals are too compressed at all, in fact I really like the vocal processing here... particularly for the vibe it seems like you're pointed at.  The ping pong delay(?) that adds some movement to them is a nice touch... I might pan snare and hats a little farther right to get them out of the way of the vocals... but like that is picking the tiniest of nits, this is a dope track.

Brothertiger / Washed Out vibes for sure. Great job dude!

Wow! Nailed the vibe, and sounds really professional to boot. Great vocals too!

Super cool M8 and garageband workflow. The vocals are so good, and the track is professional, jealous!

I also have been meaning to use garageband (have a bit on ios) just to try it. I’m fairly familiar with logic. What does garageband do in a simpler/faster way than logic? Just curious for your take having made a song in it.

woah! very nice. I was going to say this reminded me of tame impala when I read your description. the production sounds really good - hard to believe you're just getting started with vocals in your tracks! very smooth, dreamy melody and chords, it's a great listen.

Echoing the Washed Out comments as well as Tame Impala, had my jaw dropped and was vibing so hard with this!! Seriously amazing work heart heart heart

Impressive mix, sounds super pro

Oh hell yeah, the neo-psychedelic vibe is totally my shit. I'm a little jelly, I've *tried* to make music like this but it's not quite like this. The track itself is impeccable and those vocals are perfect. This would be super popular on a psychedelic spotify playlist.

Really nice production as always, definitely sitting firmly adjacent to that Tame Impala sound. I love how well this tune shows off the fact that keeping something simple can still be really effective. I can easily imagine hearing this playing while getting drinks at a bar in Brooklyn. Great vibe!

Lovin the laid back vibes and that pan-swirled-intro was suhhhweet!  I agree def feelin the TI sound a bit with those lush vocal harmonies.  Awesome mix and so cool to hear your use with the new mic.

killer! Def some washed out vibes. Nailed the tame impala style vox. Added to favorites!

The drums and vocals really evoke Tame Impala for me in the best way, this could have been on Currents for sure haha. Really enjoy the part around 2:11, I can't even tell what the sound in the background is but it's great.

This is incredible, congrats. Favorited and downloaded

Lovely! Sounds super polished, vocals are amazing!

Amazing performance overall, levels are good.

This is a fantastic track - very catchy & dreamy, with a bit of that paisley revival going on. Vocals are spot on, and I'm floored you got such slick production out of the relatively modest equipment you used! Goes to show it's not the tools, it's the talent.

Woo yes! Super polished excellent sound. Love this vibe, nailed it. Your vocals sound great.

wow nailed it!  garage band is no joke, especially in capable hands. this is a great demonstration of that. also way to set some parameters and house a track!

Thank y'all so much for the encouragement! It really means a lot to me. Deepest appreciations. heart
