Morgenrød

This week i acquired an exquis mpe controller. I really can't believe how distracted i have been by this thing, there are so many possibilities it's a little bit overwhelming. Spent a lot of time (that I didn't really have to spare) playing this week, but i suppose a big reason of being on this site is wanting to make more music, so i guess it's a good thing. The new gear feeling is starting to wear off a bit. I also started subscribing to kilohearts plugins, mainly to use their synthesizer. so a lot of new stuff all at once. i've been a bit reluctant to use synthesizers this year, I'm not sure why. but this one is very synthesizer driven. Maybe a bit of change from what I did last week, but i've been wanting to do a song for a while now, but winter has been a bit harsh on the voice, and the words just having been coming to me. Simple composition and vocal melody, i would love to something more complex sometime but singing feels pretty difficult for me, so simple it is, for now. A thing i would love to do this year is make more stuff that is performable and doesn't have to just exist inside the computer, I think this started like that. I was singing while playing the pad sound on this controller thingy. I did get through it like that, but later i swapped out two vocal takes. I made another layer with some fm bell kind of thing with pressure controlling lfo speed. and a cardboard scraped with my fingernails for texture, heavily processed. i also tried with the melodica which is the kind of "lead" sound. I had a pitch follower controlling the pitch of a resonator thing with a lot of slew, i think some parts of that turned out quite cool. and the song. eh.. what a mess of a description this.
I'm not the greatest poet in the world (though i wish i was), but i guess the song is about remembering childhood or something. I feel like it could use a third verse. i don't know. Absolutely drenched in reverb. There was an impulse response in the convolution reverb called "nuclear reactor hall" so i went to town... Possibly should have dialed it back a bit, maybe drowned a bit, but i feel like big rooms sound like that when put a lot of sound into them.  all the phrases have two tracks; one "dry" (i mean still a lot of reverb but in the mix it sounds dry) and another completely soaked. Faded the dry one out and the wet one in for each sentence, so it sounds like the voice kind of dissapears into the room, quite liked that effect. okay that's enough writing.

Lyrics:
morgenrød, jeg husker dig
fri, men nu så langt fra mig
alt som var og alt som bliver
morgenrød, jeg savner dig

himmelblå, hvem er du nu?
alt du sagde vi kunne
vi er så langt hjemmefra
himmelblå, du sagde vi skulle

Translation:
morning red, i remember you
free, but now so far away from me
all that was and all that will be
morning red i miss you

sky blue, who are you now?
all you said we could (do)
we are so far away from home
sky blue, you said we should (had to)

This is gorgeous. Really admire the vocals and how haunting they come across. The tortured and strung out strings and pads are fantastic.

Thank you for listening and the thoughtful comment. Happy you enjoyed it!

Just lovely, your voice is sitting well in the mix

Thanks for saying that! Spent a while fiddling with it, so it’s good to hear! Happy you liked it.

Wow, this is so atmospheric! The vocals fit the tone of the song beautifully.

beautiful song! simple lyrics might seem simple to make but it's not so easy, because you can say a lot with very few well chosen words. Also in danish - I think it's hard to make it sound nice because the language is just not so singable, but I think you do a good job!

Love the synth! wow, with the polyphonic bends and all, would love to play around with it at some point! You're doing cool textures too and stuff that goes across many lines, which makes it flow really well. Reminds me of the Expressive E Osmose, I hope to see many more instruments in that vein! never heard of the exquis one but I guess it is limited to what VSTs support it, eh?

Cool to hear you're also heading to more performance focus!

Thank you for listening Horatiu!
I don’t know how much intention went into the lyrics. Was singing what came to mind and then swapping out words until it made some kind of sense. Never really have clear ideas when writing songs, but maybe it’s something I can learn, somehow.
We should try and do a synth jam at some point maybe? It speaks mpe protocol (i think those or the correct technical terms…) so it just needs, whatever you hook it up to, to support that. Pretty sure you can control your hydrasynth with it. It feels a little bit plasticky and its pretty obvious that they are still developing the software side of things, but there isn’t really much competition at the price, and it does feels very expressive to play it. It also kind of has a “sound”, there are patches that it responds to better than others and they made some design choices like the thickness of the pads that yields a certain response. Anyways.. happy that you liked the song!

So soulful. What a gorgeous piece of art.

oh good heavens this is exquisite. I am partial to reverb-drenched vocals, but they work particularly well with the tastefully curated synths and sounds, and the melancholy words, melody, delivery. thank you

i listened kind of casually/ distractedly listened early in the week, and knew right away it was something i wanted to come back to when i could listen deeply and let it carry me away.

and it very much did. i don't really have the right words, but thank you for making this.
