Don't Look In the Fridge!

By Suhpos on February 8, 2026 10:57 pm

This one turned out quite dark and drony. I have been enjoying especially things that have been pleasant and calm this week, so i don't why this came out in this way. Next week maybe i will try to make something a little more bright.
I decided to go an excursion this week, to my kitchen, to sample sounds from there and use them in a piece. The are still more sounds out there that i didn't think of when i had the recording equipment there but maybe i return in thee future. All of the samples were used in Phase Plants granular sampler.
I sampled my microwave oven which is ended up being the base kind of "organ" sound for the piece. I used recordings of the microwave from two different locations. I think this sound put this project on the darker side as there are two notes coming from the microwave when it turns on with a weird interval (i haven't tried to find out exactly whats going on.) I really tried from the beginning to make it sound consonant, all the buttons i pushed were simple harmonies but i just wanted to be kind of a crying sound i don't know haha.
Then i used a sound beating the dishbrush in the sink, i used it to make this kind of random "drum" kind of sound, which also came out a little bit possesed. I'm not sure how well this integrated in the mix, i think it wanted more space.
the last sample was the faucet slowly dripping into a bottle with some keytracking bandpass filtering.
I also took an impulse response (i just clapped so nothing fancy) from the kitchen which i used for all the reverb in the track. My kitchen is a small narrow room, and sounds pretty much like what people are trying to acoustically treat when they are building studios haha, so i'm sure that didn't contribute to the pleasantness either.
I had a lot of fun with the sound design process on this but the result aybe wasn't what i was craving the most... Hope someone else has made something bright and calm this week that i can listen to...

So spooky and intense. I love your use of found sounds. Great work!

ahaha I was laughing reading the description (love the possessed sounds). very good apocalyptic vibe in this one! I love the use of the sonic space, there is tasteful everything from bass to high screeky things. evokes horrors beyond comprehension (esp the percussions on the sides), really cool and only possible with extended techniques like yours. and nice harmonies being created out of the chaos, I guess most of them were not planned but more "discovered" which is also a beautiful part of this kinda process.

GREAT process, I also was thinking to do some kitchen beat at some point, I think I have a good song idea for it... but it will take a bit more time than I had currently...

The title attracted me. I've just got to look in the fridge now.

This is super scary I can't believe it's kitchen sounds.

Sometimes it's best to put those dark places in another place. Let them be heard here, not just in your mind. This must be what it's like being captive in a spirit crystal.

Haunted kitchen. I love your description of your process and it's just wild you were able to get such an unnerving soundscape from such cozy, mundane things. I love how you have it evolve over time so the various elements all get a chance to stand out.

woah with the title and microwave it almost feels like a scene in 'close encounters of the third kind'. I love how it percolates towards the end and simmers out.  Awesome creative ideas using all the kitchen sounds.

wow this is fascinating and very unnerving (but in a good way)

i hope someday you get to produce the score for a horror film called The Kitchen
using only sounds from your kitchen

or maybe it should be called
DON'T LOOK IN THE FRIDGE
yikes

Has been a bit of crazy week (for my standards..) so haven't had the energy to respond to anything, but your kind words and listening is greatly apprieciated! Also forgot to mention the synth bass so it wasn't just the kitchen sounds...

"what it's like being captive in a spirit crystal." I have no idea what that means but if it feels like how this sounds i don't think it would like to experience that. Thank you for listening and leading me to you profile. your stuff is exactly what i didn't know i was looking for...

Haha maybe if it was a short one, i think I would go crazy after a while just making horror music... trying imagine the plot... maybe something with the vegetables becoming sentient... Thank you for listening!
