It was my girlfriend's birthday this last week and I made her a song to show how much I love her and appreciate how we've been able to grow in our relationship
‹ lyrics
What it takes
To lie naked in your eyes
Like there’s no brakes
and we can’t help but put ourselves into drive
Catching up my intuition shows me how to hold your light
Letting go of superstition while you hold me in the night
And I don’t have to know everything
To know that birds will beat their wings
And that the wind will come again
And that my heart can finally land
When I wake
I see your face light up with mine
I feel the pace slow down
And I can finally let myself unwind
All the commotion in my head can taper off and end this time
I realize what I have found with your warm hands embracing mine
And I don’t have to know everything
To know that birds will beat their wings
And that the wind will come again
And that my heart can finally land
Theres no weight
When you hold me in your eyes
I feel the space to be the person I thought I would always hide
And while we listen to our visions
Letting our dreams come to life
We can float on with each other letting ourselves become light
And I don’t have to know everything
To know that birds will beat their wings
And that the wind will come again
And that my heart can finally land
And I don’t have to know everything
To know that birds will beat their pretty wings
And that the wind will come again
And that my heart can finally land
‹ production notes
-I started this song on the acoustic guitar. I am really comfortable plucking around in finger picking styles until I find something that sounds pretty to me and slightly haunted.
-At this point I can't really remember how I came up with melody line, but I found something that I liked and then kept working at the lyrics until they really reflected where I have been at emotionally and where I hope to go with her all while staying within the melody and rhythm that I had set for myself. (once I do a verse that I really like as far as melody and rhythm I like to keep repeating its structure to the syllable count with different words. It makes the whole song feel uniform and orderly without it feeling too forced. ((hopefully:p)))
-The chorus involved me working with delaying and slowing my delivery in a way that feels soft and nice. The topic of not having to be certain about everything to love and kind of plunging into the unknown was also something I wanted to keep around because of how much I am discovering about myself.
-Once I had the verses down and choruses together I figured I was done. I was going to just play it for her in person, butttt I thought it would be nice to have something for her to listen to whenever so I started recording.
-The main vox is actually a take with guitar in it and my first take because I kept practicing so much.
-Two doubled vox that are panned slightly less than the guitar with a bit of verb and the highs taken out so they don't clash with the main centered vox.
-There are two other guitar takes that are panned to the sides with their volume down.
-There is also an extra guitar layer that is in a higher range during the choruses.
-Two violin lines and two cello lines show up in the choruses.
-The drums are sampled hits that I put into the keyboard to play live.
-The ride cymbal is a classic chorus hitter for me.
-I am so stoked about how the bass turned out and that was played live by me.
-Mostly when it comes to real instruments especially, I like to play the whole song through and get a good take. I don't like to repeat and recycle sections if I can. The emotions of the song should fluctuate with the dynamics of the song and so the way a bass is played in verse one when different lyrics are sung and emotions are hit should be different in some way (perceived or not) to the last verse. Whether that be louder or softer depends on the song.
-There is slight mix, mastering, and saturation stuff at the end. But mostly I just tried to keep my vox and guitar playing present in the mix and the drums subdued.
