My Love (Is Breaking My Heart Again) (WB05)

By spry on February 4, 2022 8:03 pm

Another song from the phone note recording archive. I wrote this spring 2019 after being betrayed. The hot potato is a little easier to handle now and I'm glad I fleshed it out into a real recording. I'm starting to get better at this vocal/guitar/bass recording thing. Still ironing out the kinks but I can feel the progress big_smile

Lyrics

My love, my love
Is breaking my heart again tonight
I know that I am not the one she will be holding tight
My love, my love
What have I done to make you go?
How am I ever supposed to know which way our future goes?

Our dreams, our plans to go around the Earth
It seems that only I know what they're worth

How could I know
You were going to go
I'd have to go it alone if
I wanted to be whole

Sometimes, all you get out of it is a song at the end. Sad, beautiful melodies suit the lyrics, and the mellow tone of the guitar fits too. Nice work! I also like the "going to go/go it alone" bit. I enjoy lyrics that take a word and play with it like that.

the sigh before you start singing is so emotionally laden.  the ending silence is also incredible.  i can feel you staring at the wall, sonically.  ugh, i feel devastated

biggest compliment i can give you is that this has Elliot Smith levels of delicate intensity/fragility

sorry you had to go through this experience.  grateful that you are sharing yourself so openly with me/us.

i've always admired you as a producer and esp. a mastering engineer but this is like a WHOLLLLLLE other side of you and it means a lot to me

WOW. I like every tone in here. Such a good song. As orangedrink said, I hear a reference to Elliot Smith, too.

I sure hope I never have to feel this uwu

Thanks! I'm glad the subtlety wasn't lost with those words. The words, melody line and guitar chords came together at the same time in one session written in a pseudo stream of consciousness style (mostly a dazed stupor on reflection). Its not usually how I write songs but the focus of the moment allowed for a strange sort of flow state. Coming back to the idea to finish it over 2 years later, there was only some cleaning up to do around the edges to make it fit together with a bass part and multitrack recording.

The sigh was something I tried to recreate from my original phone note recording but it didn't quite have the same timbre :')

The singer/songwriter is something I've been running from in a way for a long time. It's where I started though and it always feels like home coming back to it. I've neglected bringing it along my recording journey though in favor of electronic media. I think that may just be my focus for this year. It's time to be one artist instead of a bunch of fragmented this-and-thats

Thanks! Tone is really where the heart of this style is, so I'm happy I'm getting somewhere on that front smile I haven't paid much attention to this Elliot Smith guy.. Perhaps I should ^^'

Me too! It's not all bad though. For me at least, it's better to know and move on than live with illusions
