Whoops, all noise! (multichip)

By Snyderman on March 22, 2026 7:59 am

Got into a bit of a time crunch and wasn't able to fully realize this very silly idea. I've been working with a lot of chips lately and figured I'd try to make something using only the noise channels of various chips, or just noise waveforms in the case of the C64.

It's interesting to see how different chip makers handled noise generation. There's a lot of commonalities with both pseudo-random and periodic noise among the chips but enough differences that I did get some cool sounds, particularly from the more analog sounding VIC-20.

The full list of chips below, though I didn't really make full use of the range of sounds; much more breadth than depth this time.

- Sega Master System
- Neo Geo Pocket (pretty similar to SMS above)
- Game Boy
- C64 (8580 variant)
- NES
- Wonderswan
- VIC-20
- Virtual Boy

Multichip needs to be a thing. Moar systems. Moar sound chips. And WAY more of this epic, "I am hacking the mainframe and the moon and your worst enemy" kind of music. You have redefined the memory of my mum asking "how can you listen to that noise?" Guess what, "that noise" happens to be awesome.

Fun stuff for sure smile

Neat concept! The escalating variety of white noise effects throughout the track is really cool.
