Week 2 - House Groove (PSG+OPLL)

By Snyderman on January 14, 2024 10:33 pm

A simple house groove, very early 1990s. Inspired by the old Chicago and Detroit folks (Mr. Fingers, Derrick May, etc), more recent folks like Diode Milliampere, and of course the Soundblaster generally.

I intend to make some more tracks using using the PSG+OPLL (Sega Master System + FM expansion) since I really enjoy the simplicity of 2-OP FM and there's a nice warm color compared to the Genesis DAC.

For those curious I really enjoy the percussion mode overrides (playing dependent percussive tracks together creates strange metallic conflicts).

I love the sounds you went with in this one (especially that bass)! Nice blend of warm and shrill timbres in a really addictive pattern.

Yes some YM2413 rep! Definitely a really cool use of those delightful presets.

Very cool beat! Sounds simple but actually it's not so simple with a closer listen! Love the spectrum of sounds and the metallic things as you say! And the bass is cool, I imagine a little videogame dude playing the line with his little sunglasses and little leather jacket.

Your lead has good sound to it, don't be afraid to use more of them there.
