Week 22 in the bag!

I decided to push myself and also finished a track for Battle of the Bits earlier this week. The challenge; use just Sega Genesis GEMS patches + whatever PSG patches.

Since I spent all of the time picking out favorite patches and modifying volumes, and creating a lot of custom stuff for square and noise channels I figured I'd just make a second track using essentially the same session (including tempo).

I wrote both GEMS tracks in honor of Jon Miller, one of the creators of the GEMS editor and driver who just passed away early May 2024. GEMS get a lot of grief, but I wanted to pay my respects to someone that had quite an influence on Sega Genesis music, even if some of it was creating a sound engine everyone says sounds "farty".

I really had two halves or two styles I wanted to write, more of a classic 80s funk / electro thing and a 2000s ghetto funk deal. The first part reminds me of a lot of stuff Mark Miller was writing (Kid Chameleon etc). Not the most elegant transition and I ran out of time to really touch this one up but I enjoyed putting it together.

I dig that main "bassline" that it starts with, and that drives the whole thing.  All the other melodies are cool, but it all rests on that bassline.  This is cool, man, because we all see NES and SNES styled music all the time, but I don't ever really think about "Genesis-style" music.  Glad you made this!
