Formica

By sleepside on March 8, 2026 11:58 pm

Made on my Dirtywave M8. 2 minutes to deadline, no time for more description

EDIT: Half of the sounds in this track are manipulated samples of me tapping, scrapping, or banging on a formica table, hence the title. Even the lead is a formica sample, used in OSC mode as a single-wave oscillator.

The bass is 4-op FM, the gated synth is a pitched-down "Cosmic Sound" sample from my Casio SA-39, the crystal synth from the outro is Hypersynth, and the claps are my own samples I was able to record in a big echo-y stairwell as work

Not the smoothest arrangement I've ever done, but hopefully the patchwork is enjoyable

Fitting that it was made on the Dirtywave M8 as there is a raw and dirty quality to this that is super appealing.  I like those descending chirpy noises, too.

I like it, but it's missing a description. Darn.

What a “it’s not the instrument, it’s the musician” moment — my table top does not sound this good :-)

Wow yes that's expert level sample manipulation!

Thank you! I *think* the chirpy noises you're talking about are either me cranking the feedback on one of the bass's modulators or Cosmic Sound

Thank you! I went back and added a description, but the short version is that half of this track is me manipulating samples of banging on a table

Thank you! My FM does not sound as good as your FM, so there's tradeoffs big_smile

Thank you! Using samples in weird ways is my favorite. (You should check out deeckzeven's "pool boi" if you haven't. He does some wild shit with billiard ball samples)

WB Tiny Formica Desk moment right here. the groove is spectacular. it's got that slippy, shuffle-y magic. the panning sound at 1:40ish is so good. like we're just under attack. love it.

that clap!
really great work here all around
