Of Times and Places Long Forgotten

By scottux on March 9, 2014 10:12 pm

Gear: OP-1, Korg Volca Beats, Logic Pro
Ideas going in: I picked up a new piece of kit this week, and I was more than eager to try it out in a new WeeklyBeats, so I made this song around the assorted drum patterns I'd invented on the Korg over the two days after I bought it.
Reflection afterwards: The Volca Beats is awesome, but it definitely has a very characteristically unique and not always appropriate sound. I actually found it difficult to find sounds on the OP-1 that I thought would match with the analog thumpings of the little black box I'd become so enamored with. I think this reverb heavy synthy/brassy mix (a very stripped down, three instrument arrangement, which I generally don't try out too often) sounds good to your ears. I'm worried I got a little too excited with the reverb or the side-chained compressor, so let me know what you think. ALSO! I am pretty sure I didn't mix this loud enough overall, so turn up before you listen!

i like those opening chords a lot and the melody throughout is suhweet.  the only volume thingy i noticed was the intro was a tad louder than the rest of the track.  love that main synth brass sound though smile

+1 on those opening chords, was fun to guess where it was gonna go after that. Many nice ideas in here...did it all go into the op-1 and then mastering in logic? Did you use album or separate the tracks in logic?

I actually recorded the entire song, sans drums to album in OP-1 and exported the album to Logic from there. Then, playing along with the progression I'd already defined on the OP-1, I jumped between saved sequences on the Volca Beats.

Dude, I didn't know if the song was gonna make it until I found those chords. As for the volume, yeah, I got a little too excited with the side-chained compressor, and it just ended up keeping the OP-1 track down the entire song. I'm gonna put a new version of this song up on Soundcloud soon.

Really enjoying this mate.  I can't believe the amazing stuff people track on the OP-1.  Fun times!  (do you use this on public transport by any chance?)

One thing I love about all your tracks so far is that they just catch the perfect moods the titles allude to. Really nice track. Very cinematic and full sounding.

Caltrain, yeah, but work bus is usually where I do a lot of my writing.

Fits quite perfectly, IMHO! Great track!!!
