Vermilion

This song idea was somewhat out of the blue. One of my best friends, who moved away quite some time ago, recently picked his guitar back up. We actually were in a high school band together. He is, without a doubt, one of the most respected guitarist I know within my musical circle. He has always looked at the guitar differently. In my opinion, he has mastered the ability of allowing the guitar to do all the talking instrumentally. He sent me a riff this week, and gave me the fortune of allowing me to use it for my WB. I wanted the guitar to be the focal point of this song. So bass and drums are second fiddle on purpose. I hope to do more of these throughout the year as I can listen to him play all day.

The song title is somewhat an inside story between us. Let's just say there is a little slice of heaven in a small town called "Vermilion."

This is great, you worked his guitar in perfectly and definitely made it the focal point of the song, whilst adding those nicccce sounding brush drums.  I’m hearing a vibe of Andy McKee music in his guitar playing.  Great mix job too.  Sounds gr8

Yes, acoustic guitar is great. I agree that mix is pretty good. Well done.

When I grow up, I want to be like MK. You set the drums in perfectly and I think you hit your goal with this one. Awesome job Chris/MK.

Amelia and I are talking and this sounds like a part of a movie where something unreasonably sad happens but then there is the turnaround point where things start to look better and this song starts playing. ie: missing dog thought to be dead comes running over a hill while the whole family embraces at the thought of losing their loved one and the son turns around to see the dog running in slow motion and the boy runs in slow motion towards the dog with tears in his eyes and falls down while the dog licks his face and the family runs around them celebrating. Fuck, now I'm crying.

I could listen to Kaffel all day.. you did a great job on this. Very relaxing.

Yeah dude, this is so chill, I love it.  I'm glad the dog turned out to be okay though, brings a tear to my eye as well.

Mmmm I love the fade in intro.  Guitar sounds beautiful.  Really great production on this; everything is seated perfectly in the mix IMO.  Really great guitar composition.  Good stuff

This is fucking beautiful. Holy shit. The intro has this ocean-like quality to it that just lulls you into the track. Wonderful stuff.

Andy McKee was the dude who forever changed Kaffel. He used to play Thrice, Underoath, all the shit we grew up with.  He then found Andy and never looked back. I was a big fan of the brushes on the track too. Very appropriate.

Thanks Jim, MK was super flattered by all the comments/compliments this week. I am really happy with how the track turned out. That fucking description. Haha.

Thanks Matt. I am excited with how the mix turned out too. Id like to be consistent with that. I feel like Im a bit hit or miss. We will see as the year progresses.

Interesting...The drums weren't really second fiddle, I think, the volume was lower, yes, but all those crashes were quite brash sounding against the guitar (nicely played in both cases). I think it worked though and possibly the drums could even have been a bit louder, given the right eq...

After listening for a few more days I agree. The drums could have been mixed a hair better into the final product. They are certainly quieter the more I listen to the track.

This is great stuff, maybe you can add a harmony to accompany the guitar on the same level as the drums and bass?
