Decided to have some fun this week with another aggressive metal tune. Tried to go for a bit more of a black metal vibe but since I don't listen to a whole lot of black metal I think it really came out as more of a blackened death sort of thing. This was the first week that I really tried to get the volume levels right in the beginning, so I think as a result the drums come through much better without me having to crank them up. I'm still pretty clueless about getting the final master volume correct so I think I may have decided to err on the side of slightly too quiet versus too loud. Hopefully I can find a good balance.

Took a long break from WB and I sort of regret that, but I'm going to try to make the most of the last six submissions!

It's soooo fast

Great job on your track this week. This is relentless and whoever could play drums to this would be a beast. I dig your epic outro with the guitar solo layered in over the lead. The final clean guitar sounds super nice too with the effects.

it's a little overall quiet, but the mix is PERFECT!

I highly highly recommend this:

It's free!  You can put your favorite song in there, check the relative volume via "integrated LUFS" and then adjust your track accordingly.  Don't worry about getting to pro levels when you are first starting out, and pro levels are kinda shockingly overrated, but it's good to know how loud your stuff is relative to other stuff you make.

great track and welcome back!

Holy cow, those drums! My wrists hurt just listening to it. Mix sounds really nice and balanced. This is super intense, and raises my blood pressure listening to it. The tension release at 2:40 is awesome. Unexpected, and I love how you build up the leads on top.

We're glad to have you back. Finish strong!

Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. I definitely went bit overboard with the tempo but I liked the way it sounded so much that I decided to keep it that way. Glad you liked the ending. It took me quite a while to get a guitar solo that I liked.

Thanks so much! I really did try to put some time into getting the levels balanced this time. Thanks for the suggestion on the plug-in! I’ll definitely have to start messing around with that.

Thanks! Glad you were into it. I’m not sure all of the drum parts made perfect sense because I started out with some stock logic drummer sections and then took the speed way way up, but it sounded close to what I think I’ve heard people play over stuff like that. I’m glad the mix came out alright. I started that process earlier than usual so I had some time to play around with it. Still don’t understand EQ and compression (or at least how to properly use them) that well but I think I learned about getting the initial volume levels in the right realm.

Thanks! I’m glad you liked it! I was really happy with the way the song turned out. I actually am still working on being able to play this one all the way through without my arm cramping up! I had to record some of the really fast parts in 8 bar sections and take breaks in between because I was getting arm spasms haha. But when I was originally working on this I was just relying on brute force, and I think trying to get this one down has helped me learn a more relaxed technique.

Definitely! At least for this one I was. I think it helped that I got started right after submitting that jam I did before.

Excellent pace throughout including that break midway with the soaring guitar solo.  Nice work!
