Stranded on Callisto

By Saguaro Gigante on April 1, 2022 6:32 am

I had a lot of fun with this one despite being a little pressed for time. Due to other obligations I only had until Thursday so almost immediately after submitting last week’s song I took a couple hours to brainstorm some riffs and then spent the next day listening and thinking of arrangement ideas. This week I learned how to use the arrangement tools in a DAW to duplicate and move regions around so I was able to get a skeleton fairly quickly compared to previous weeks where I would just re record sections to make them longer or similar hammer and tong methods. After that I spent time trying to get decent transitions and volume levels with the layers correct. The later solo was tricky as I don’t usually improvise at these faster tempos. I must have recorded 20 takes before I got the one that I went with. It’s still not perfect but  I think it captures what I was going for.

The delay/echo on the guitars during the first part of the song is super nice, creating a spacey atmosphere right from the get go. The lead guitar with middle eastern phrases is pretty cool, and I like how it leads into those arpegiated guitar riffs from 1:30-3:18. That lead line at 2:26 reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it, but it's a nice overhead melody for the section. When the heavy stuff kicks in at 3:20 I love the overall tonal aesthetic of the tune at that point, just reminds me of something nostalgic I guess without being able to pinpoint what exactly. Guitar solo at 5:36 back to the marty friedman days haha, just a very triumphant sounding shreddy solo. And awwww yeah, fucking getting heavy as hell at 6:40. Nice pick scraps too. And black metal at 7:10!!! I'm in love. lol. Awesome job this week, impressive you were able to get so much done with so little time.

Well, great job!

I really enjoyed the chord progressions in this one. Also, how do you get from being pressed for time to releasing an 8 minute song. Nice work! Time to get a bass on these tracks, it'll really take the intensity to the next level. Keep it up!

Love the diversity of styles presented here and how well they've been arranged to feel cohesive. It can be really tricky to pull this off without it sounding like different songs stitched together and you've managed it very skillfully. Love the first section at 0:50 and how it resolves into the arpeggios. I think the guitar solo turned out great. Came across natural and effortless to my ear. Nicely done heart

I guess the mix isn't really what you were after, but you're right, it gets the point across really well

These are some very tasty riffs

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed all the different parts. I felt like I went a little overboard with all the different types of sections but I'm glad it was well received. I definitely think in the first heavy section some influences from the nu-metal days of the early 2000s were definitely coming out; probably what gave you that nostalgic feeling.

Glad you liked them! I think starting with an initial riff brainstorm helped with getting enough material. I also worked on it for a few hours every night for the four nights that I had available. I was afraid of not having it ready so I went at it with more intensity that I probably would have otherwise. And for sure will definitely be trying to incorporate more bass on future efforts!

I'm glad you thought that it was cohesive! I was really afraid that it would just turn out to be riff salad at first, but luckily it seemed to work out. Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to check it out!

Yeah definitely right now my mix ambitions are very low; mostly just trying to avoid having new parts come in at levels much louder than everything else. I will probably start messing with that more as time goes on. Glad you liked the riffs!

Lovely guitar melody tone in the first section.  The cleans sound very compressed to my ears which can work for cleans.  Lots of cool ideas through the whole track.

Thanks for checking it out! Your comment about the compression intrigues me. I actually am not sure how much compression was on the guitars at the beginning as at the moment I've just been default presets with some minor modifications, but I'm glad you mentioned that because now I've learned something else to consider when trying to find a clean tone. Now that I think about it I should probably take some time to go learn about the applications of compression because I hear it mentioned a lot in regards to getting nice drum and bass sounds as well.

i'm not really a solo person, so i like how you have the melodic riffs combining at 2:30

awesome title!

great solo work at 5:50

WHY ARE THEY STRANDED ON CALLISTO!?!?!?

WHERE WERE THEY GOING??!?!?!?

WILL THEY SURVIVE?!?!?!?!!?!?!

Thanks! I was pretty happy with that riff combination. I love guitar solos but I've recently learned that I'm really liking small melodic ideas that develop over time.

I imagine they were on a scientific mission and got separated from the rest of their party. After a long hike back to the base they find the others had mysteriously disappeared... Their communications systems are down and their supplies are running low. I feel quite hopeful for them for most of the track, but then the stuff at the end makes me less optimistic...
