Baby Basilosaurus’ First Chomp Chomp

By Saguaro Gigante on May 8, 2022 11:58 pm

Made this from a wonky bluesy riff I had from way back when. I found an old recording where I was jamming with a drummer friend of mine and was improvising riffs. Sadly we never worked on any of it after that and probably never will, but I had a good time going through that recording and bringing this song to fruition. I started pretty late this week so it was nice that the song was basically already completed and just needed refining. I tried to keep the project pretty simple, just a couple rhythm guitars and a lead guitar with bass and drums. I was definitely worried about the mix at first, but the more I listen to it the more I think it sounds alright. It really seems to depend on what I listen to it on. I mixed it with an old pair of regular headphones so naturally I think it sounds best on those. I decided to have some fun with the title, the song sounded heavy in some parts which made me think of a large animal, but it's also kind of whimsical in other places so I figured why not name it after a baby version of an ancient sea predator.

The mix is serviceable and the guitars are epic again. Nice work.

Really like the clean tones of the intro.

Riff works all right with the overdriven too. Lead guitar melodies are interesting.

Lol, epic song title. I think the mix sounds pretty good, and I'm also listening on some ear buds. Although I think the mixing advice I've most often read is to invest in a really great pair of over ear headphones and/or some monitors for mixing and then also use a cheap pair of speakers or cheap earbuds to compare the mix on. The idea being that most people will probably hear your song in less than ideal circumstances and you still want it to sound good. Anyways, great blues driven rock throughout, outro is heavy and dope. Also, sorry to say, but this song isn't certified Saguaro Gigante if it's under 5 minutes in length. Try harder next time. Lol

Yeah, wtf is up with this short song, man? I really dug the dissonant bit at 2:00 and I think reprised a bit in the outro.

I’ll add some grain-of-salt, hopefully constructive, mix feedback (tell me when to shut up): Guitars are pretty souped up with reverb/delay, to the point where they lose some of their edge. They stand in stark contrast to the very dry drums, which get a little buried in the mix.

Cool song!
