30 Miles From Here

By Saguaro Gigante on April 11, 2022 12:01 am

This one happened pretty last minute. Didn't have any ideas until Friday night when I found an old riff on my phone that I never used. I had a good time making this one. Tried to use some of the tips that I've been getting in the comments about to get a better sounding track. Still have a long way to go with mixing. This track is the first one that I programmed my own drums from scratch on. I've been using the drummer tracks in GarageBand up until now, but it's satisfying to have made them myself. I still need to learn how to get the bass and drums to sit right in the mix. Ended up working right until the deadline on this one.

Honestly this is probably my favorite song of yours so far this year. There's a lot of nasty sounding chords in there at the beginning that sound so grunge era, and I really like the natural evolution of the song. Taking your time on the center section really pays off for that outro. And the tone is solid throughout. Good job man.

Fuck yeah, this is awesome!

When the descending chord progression comes in at 4:50 after the soft mid section, it's kind of mind blowing. The simple four chord descent isn't what I was expecting, and that simplicity really just nailed it to the f'n wall. The build in volume and complexity that comes after is so good.

Great job on the drum programming too. Not sure if you're doing this already, but one way to help deconflict guitars and bass is to put a high pass filter on your guitars and chop off everything below 100-150Hz or so.

WOW

Sorry I haven't listened to your music before, this is amazing!  love the riff, love the double bass pedals.

incredible big breakdown, this would be amazing at a live show where the spotlight just focuses on the guitarist.  then the PYROTECHNICS COME FOR THE GRAND FINALE

excellent word choice; using this for a track title

Thanks! I actually think it is my favorite so far this year too. Glad you liked those chords! I ended up using the Hendrix chord (I had to look it up, it is an E7#9) and then some descending dominant seventh chords to make that riff. Normally wouldn't use those but I liked the weird grunge funk feel it had. Glad that you felt the grunge vibes too. I'm glad you liked the center section. I was afraid it would take too much time, but I really like the slow build so I decided to go with it.

Glad you liked it! I'm glad you liked that section at the end. After I found that weird delay/chorus/something preset and recorded that guitar solo I wanted to hear a nice straight ahead rock jam to close it out. I worked really hard to get the build up just right (probably spent most of my time on that section) so I'm glad it came across! And I have not tried that before but I will for sure try that on the next one. Your tips have been gold! It wasn't until today that I remembered to try what you said about recording two rhythm guitars and then doing a hard pan to both sides and it just improved the sound of everything so much. Will definitely try that high pass filter idea next time. Keep the tips coming!

Thanks for checking it out! Glad you liked it! I'm stoked it induced visions of an epic stage show, I was trying really hard to make this one sound as huge as possible. I'm having fun imaging the pyrotechnics now. Definitely would have to get a smoke machine too!

Oh yeah that guitar riff is really tasty - it has a great grunge feel, a la soundgarden maybe. That's my jam! Some parts are even maybe a little like stone temple pilot. I could hear Scott Weiland singing on a track like this! Discovering your tracks and looking forward to listening to more of them!

Those riffs with those drums make for some very, very satisfying rock. Kinda adjacent to Terran music from Starcraft.

Thanks! I'm a huge fan of Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden so that's a nice compliment! Thanks for checking it out!

Thank you! Never played Starcraft so I had to go check out the Terran music on YouTube but I liked it for sure!

Hell yes. This had me banging my head and air drumming. The pay off is mega when it gets going around the 5:30 minute mark, when that bass pedal gets a pumping. +1 all the comments about digging this.

Nice work with the drums too. I'm also using garageband. This week was my first one deviating from the AI drummer. I have been reluctant due to the extra time needed, but now I'm at the stage whereit will be needed to really get some sections tracks how I want.

This week I used the drummer track as a starting template though, copied and pasted it into a midi track, and then edited it from there. Just an idea if it might be useful to you in the future.

Look forward to hear more!

Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm glad that the buildup at the end seems to be working for people, I spent quite a bit of time trying to get that just right. I think the drum programming is fun! I'll have to learn about velocity and stuff though, I was having a problem in that my drums for this week were quiet and I kept having to just raise the volume on everything in the drum editor; it got the job done but I think there's probably a better way. I actually upgraded to Logic recently (this was the first one I did with it) now that I've gotten a bit more comfortable in GarageBand, but I'm still mostly using the simplified version which feels like GB with more buttons.

And nice tip about the drummer to MIDI thing. I think I saw that on a video once but I haven't played with it yet, but that does seem like a good way to get a drum track going nice and quick but with more flexibility.

And thanks for checking it out!

fun adventure!

Def hearing that 90s influence in the main riff and chorus.  Really enjoying the sound of your guitars.  This is an epic sounding track from the solo guitars in the middle section to the double bass heaviness dang this brings me back.
