Oh, Fox River

By sad_infamy_sings on June 12, 2022 9:21 pm

oh man, been working on this one for years! same as the coyote song. What’re more i think I got a whole book going with this thing.

Oh Fox River
Why did you do that to me?
Oh Fox River
I flew up through the path to thee

Suffocate
Phantoms chasing me
crushing weight
a hex on me
must stay awake
on a runaway train
with a sad, sad creature

My escape is made upon this place
To the riverside, I
try to get away
leave me alone
this toxic home
I fly away
to the riverside

I fly to the riverside
I sing my heart to thee
In the rhythm of my bike
There’s safety in the trees
To get lost in the prairie path
A red wing black birds prayer
I’ll fly with them

Phantoms chasing me,
I try to get away
and then there’s that old hex,
and i cannot escape.
Lost in the fog,
On a runaway train
with a sad, sad, creature,
must be in pain.

I passed by an old witch on the bank standing by a pyre.
It all caught up to me,
there’s no safety in the trees.
Fox River, why did you do that to me?

And so I flew far away from the fox,
I’m sorry mom,
I can’t carry that hex anymore.
The river is endless,
and don’t you know
they all connect.
All along, I was hanging on to that same old hex.

Then I met another riverside,
And it washed it all away,
ate it all up like an ancient hungry fae
showed me a love
and wrote a poem in my heart
and now I know

Oh fox river,
you have done no wrong by me
Oh fox river,
you’re just a stream beside me.

Cool mood; especially dig the backing vocals when they come in.

I've got ~3.5 parallel books worth of imagery in my head about what's possibly going on from the lyrics tongue

I really dig how this isn't just a folk song in the sense that it's a solo performance of singing and an acoustic instrument, but that the lyrics sound very folk-lore as well (like a Grimm fairy-tale). They're well written and seem like they're telling a story that can be easily followed on first read but also be interpreted metaphorically, like the character is running away from some kind of unresolved issue (Phantoms and hexes) and seeking a place of comfort to contemplate (the fox river). Or at least, that's my interpretation.

p.s. we both included the mention of Fae in our lyrics this week, haha.

This is so damn good, the “phantoms chasing me” part is incredible—is that falsetto? Everything panned right with reverb is also really really beautiful. There’s something amazing about happy songs that have haunting and dark lyrics, the juxtaposition is striking here.

Do you have vocals isolated? I’ve been considering doing remixes and collabs for a while. smile

What a journey
really enjoy the sounds

Thanks- I didin’t know I could do the backing vocals and was surprised by the effect! I will have to incorporate them better in another iteration of the song perhaps. Glad the lyrics create some imagery

nice! I will check out your song. Thanks for the appreciation! Your interpretation is pretty much what I had intended when writing it, but I also like to leave things open to interpretation.

Thanks!! I don’t know if it’s falsetto, just singing high in some manner.

I’m pretty sure I do! But, if I don’t and there’s something messy, I can always resing it— unlike my other tracks, this one’s been in the works for a while, and I need to practice it because I think I want to try performing it someday in some capacity.

Wonderful stuff!
