Wabi-Sabi Whispers

last Spring, before the war

I welcome all critical feedback.

After thinking about it for 8 years and poking at it occasionally this entire time, I finally released a full album. It's currently on Bandcamp, with streaming services coming on May 1st.

This piece is a straightforward ballad.

Duduk is a traditional woodwind instrument from Armenia. Here's a wonderful example of how it sounds. It was recently featured prominently in the love theme of "Dune: Part Two". I watched Loopop's video on how to make a ballpark duduk patch with an ARP 2600. I created an equivalent on my Waldorf Iridium, and while neither patch really sounds like an acoustic duduk, I do find it to be a very pleasant timbre. So the piece is centered around it.

Subharmonicon chirps and pads provide a harmonic base, while a Yamaha CP300 adds the e-piano that also doubles as bass. I initially wanted the piece to be just that, but I found the result to lack some tightness, so I rounded it up with drums. Now it feels like a song.

108 BPM 4/4, F-major. Analog Rytm drums with a mix of TR-707 samples and internal sounds. Duduk patch made with Iridium. Yamaha CP300 e-piano, including piano bass. Moog Subharmonicon arp / distorted pad.

For sure, that synth Duduk sounds really nice. Really warm sounding and smooth as it transitions from note to note. I got fully immersed in this tune.

This is absolutely delightful. I particularly love how expressive the main voice sounds, it's amazing! Sometimes it sounds like you're using either a real string instrument or an Osmose to get some of the smaller nuanced expression changes.
Awesome work!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh those subharmonicon chirps are wonderful. Very chill piece and really nicely balanced, great clarity, I'm sorry I'm nerding out on how great this ear candy mix sounds lol

Such a lovely, inviting sound. This feels really delicately arranged and cohesive. I still haven't caught Dune 2 yet but excited to hear more Duduk, your synth patch is great!

This is fantastic. I love that you went deep into the sound design and then applied it in a brilliant way. My son and I had a great time listening to this on the way to school. It felt like we were on an adventure and learning.

that 2600 sounds amazing! The Subharmonicon chirps are a great addition.

Beautiful composition and confident playing. Nice one!

congrats on the album release!

congradulations on the album release & the Duduk sound is really neat

Beautiful composition - the melody stands out, and the drums and pads support is great too!

Congrats on the album! checking it out now

btw are you gonna do one single at a time on streaming until the whole album is out? You should consider it - no reason not to try and hack the algorithm in this day and age. That's my plan for the next ones. Good luck!

that lead patch is sublime, excellent vibe on this track

yeah love this patch great job!  so expressive. this is a good example of how a a major key can sound sad or wistful.

Love the sound of that lead.  Such a calming and peaceful quality to it.  The CP300 and drums were an excellent touch.  Gave me some Vangelis meets Hammer vibes.  Great melody and mix.  Nice work!

Thanks for listening! The Iridium Keyboard's polyphonic aftertouch keybed allows for some sublime expression. I love that about this synth.

Yeah, Iridium Keyboard is no Osmose but with velocity sensitivity, polyphonic aftertouch, pitch bend, a mod whee, and an expression pedal, you've got quite the instrument for expressive play. Too bad it's also very buggy but I managed to work around most issues myself, including soldering a better pot for pitch bend so it's more predictable big_smile

Haha, your comment made me use the Subharmonicon again this week. Thanks for your kind words!

Thank you for taking the time to comment! The love theme in the movie is sublime, I stayed for the entire end titles roll just to hear it again on that huge IMAX sound system.

That's very cute, thanks both for listening! heart

In my case it's an Iridium recreation of what Loopop did on his Arp 2600M. Or maybe you mean you liked that timbre better? big_smile Might very well be!

Yeah, the Subharmonicon is a one trick pony with one hell of a trick. I don't think I'll ever sell it but I admittedly don't use it as often as the rest of my gear!

Thank you, I should probably advertise it some big_smile

Hm, good idea for the future but at this point the streaming game is already in motion. I do have a video clip for one of the tracks so I'll be releasing that alongside the album being available on streaming services to get some attention.

Thank you for the compliments!

Right! I think I originally learned that from Chopin (most Nocturnes are major keys), Satie (Gymnopedie No. 1), and Debussy (Clair De Lune). In modern music, The Cure are masters of nostalgic major chords.

That's some major compliments right there. Thank you so much!

really beautiful piece.

I agree the patch doesn't sound like an acoustic duduk but regardless you've achieved a lovely sound and your melodies are very expressive, great work!

missed this last week as it was CRUNCH TIME. lovely piece, and congrats on the album release!

Lovely calm and emotive piece. Great work on the Duduk patch, sounds great. I just watched a video about how Hans Zimmer made the Dune score, was cool they customized a lot of instruments with hardware from home depot and used some unconventional things. Sound design in that was amazing.

This is super pretty and very lovely. It's definitely not quite the instrument, but it's what it's closest to. I did notice you can bend the notes with one, maybe something to play with?
