Constant Oppressive Knowledge of the Omnicrisis

By rplktr on July 22, 2024 12:01 am

I welcome all critical feedback. Can relicense if needed, just ask.

Literal speed trash this time, published within minutes of the deadline.

84 BPM 4/4, C-minor. Pure analog drums from Analog Rytm. Iridium provides the bass and the solo. Subharmonicon plays the stereo arp sequence.

I reuploaded this entry after I identified the mix was incredibly muddy due to haphazard last-minute mixing in headphones only. I appreciate the following comments left on the original entry:

Awesome groove with delicious synth leads that kick in around 1:20. You really make your own synths?  That's awesome. I remember trying to do that as a kid back in the 70s down in my parent's basement, experimenting with different amps and effects pedals on my Pianotone keyboard. Not quite the same thing, but it was fun.

Well, now I need to hear the [Muddy-Mix] version lol

I love the distinction between the bass-y parts, and the clarity of the solo portion, and what sound like the "hints" of the solo instrument being scattered into the earlier parts, but not drawing the main focus.

Love the texture of that arp line.  Sweet progression that the lead floats over ooooh and that fill is extra nice.

those melodic toms (?) are so tasty. this was a really fun track, and sounds great. from the image i wasn't expecting such playful music! nice work

So I was listening to this a couple times and then got distracted by dogs, which happens like 20 times a day in my house, but I was surprised at how much this persisted playing in my head right after - in a good way - most notably the melodic toms and the chord/bass change at 0:48. Which I love. But I'm also curious as hell what that change would sound like if the toms jumped in pitch too.

Also how are you processing the subharmonicon? It sounds great, and it's also not completely dominating the composition which is challenging for something made quickly (this might be speedy but it ain't trash)

I have a patch that I never unpatch that makes Subharmonicon stereo. It uses the Mutable Instruments Streams dual LPG where each channel is one SubH oscillator + its subs. To make this work you need to use an external mixer, so I have a pair of Doepfer A138n mixers for that. One for OSC1 + its subs, and the other for OSC2 + its subs.

Patched this way, the sequencer triggering OSC1 does NOT trigger OSC2, so you get much more space in the mix, plus the stereo separation is very pleasant IMO.

Everything is so percussive. I love it

Lol, I misread and thought this was going to be speed thrash metal wink maybe next time. I think this one is really cool, the main bassline sounds dope and the chippy lead in the second half is really cool as well. Love all the modulation on the sounds. Pretty good speed trash!

Yeah, mostly software. I wrote the 4.0 firmware for Polyend Medusa. I did solder a few eurorack modules myself, but I didn't really love the experience so I'm sticking to in-the-box experiences big_smile

haha, I assure you you wouldn't enjoy that as much. Honestly, coming back to this after a few weeks I still think I could reduce some mud from the bass but it is what it is!

Glad you like it, Subharmonicon is good for creating such happy accidents, although the chime-y fast tempo parts are performed live with the Trigger button on the device.

The song, per the title, is about the unrelenting incoming stream of catastrophic information. The image tries to go somewhat lateral thinking about it and imagines hordes of demons in a game like Doom, also unrelenting and often overwhelming. It's unclear if the character in the frame is the overwhelmed protagonist or one of the demons. Maybe both? Like "you're not stuck in traffic, you *are* traffic".

The bass line is maybe a little bit metal, IDK big_smile
