I welcome all critical feedback. Can relicense if you're interested, just ask.

Kind of a speedtrash week since I'm traveling, away from my usual equipment. Another single-chord acid piece with vocals. Kinda lofi. Mixed in headphones. Not much time to complete.

› Lyrics

122 BPM 4/4, C-major. Vocals recorded and processed with Roland E-4. All synths and acid Opsix. Drums made with Polyplex. No AI used in any part of the process. For this year every cover art is a photo I took.

i like that distorted and computerized sound you milked the presence of your voice with, very effective, and the rest of the mix sounds so massive around it, nice work! heart

I believe in box

excellent work for a quick n dirty traveling song

This has some excellent sounds. And I really like how the track opens op around 1m30s.

As you're open for feedback:

I'm not sure about delivery of the vocals. I'm not saying it's wrong, not at all. I'm just kind of confused by it. The track is kind of nice and lively. With quite a lot of progression/evolution. It has an energy to it. But the vocals feel a bit flat and lifeless to me. Now it could very well be that's intentional on your part. As a form of juxtaposition. But then that's not registering with me. As in, I don't get why the vocal style is this way for a track like this. For me the vocals&lyrics are not connecting on an emotional level to music. It's entirely possible that I'm just missing something, so do with my feedback what you will. Just thought I'd mention it. Hope you don't mind! Neat track otherwise though.

great work. this track and others makes me reflect on my process and discipline when I sit down to work on music. the automation and details with slight variation etc is something I dont think ive gotten to once in these twelve weeks. im happy to get rough ideas in but this and other "speed trash" entries that all sound better than stuff that (most of the time) takes me 6+ hours over the week makes me think of things I could do differently. I know I sit and loop stuff and think about what to do instead of doing it a lot. ANYWAY! inspiring.

I appreciate the honest feedback. I ask for it explicitly in every track description and I'm glad you felt comfortable sharing. Truly, thank you!

So, to dig deeper about lifeless vocals: what would you have me do? Relative relaxed/soft vocals against otherwise intense music is something I've come across many times in the past (like NIN's The Great Destroyer or Radiohead's I Might Be Wrong or FLA's Next War), so clearly that's not the entire reason why it doesn't work for you in my track. I must be missing something in my rendition of a similar style.

Open to suggestions from any listener here!

Oooh yais lovin that 303 line and how it floats around the mix.  Excellent drum groove!  Such a nice crunch to the drums and it goes so nicely with the heavenly lead.  Excellent work!

I had a listen to the tracks you've mentioned. Let me offer you my perspective on the differences I hear between those vocal parts and yours. Not as a form of criticism but as form of constructive feedback. And obviously, this is just how I hear things. That doesn't mean I'm right. But a comparison might be interesting anyway.

The Great Destroyer:
It's only the first few lines that Reznor delivers in a somewhat "relaxed" fashion. Though I would say that even at the start of the tune there is a hint of tension in the delivery. That escalates as the song progress and his delivery get more and more melodic. And simultaneously more grating against the music. Which I'm sure is a thematic choice. As the lyrics deal with hiding your inner self/monster.

I Might Be Wrong:
I don't really hear how this relates to your track. York's voice is so much more abstract and melodic than yours. It's barely recognizable as a voice. Even more so than in most Radiohead songs. It's just a layer of sound. Where your voice is very much that, a voice. More on that later.

Next War:
I'm assuming that you're referring to the somewhat more relaxed vocals in the first two choruses? The way I hear those is that they may be relaxed. But the harmonization effect on them makes them serve an important role in the harmony. So I think they become a layer of sound, of tonal information.

In conclusion:
Your voice is a lot louder and more upfront than the examples you've given. Not to imply that is wrong, not at all. It's just a difference I noticed.

In the 3 songs you've mentioned the vocals tend to be more abstract. Often more a layer of sound, rather than a clear, distinct vocal.

What I think really sets them apart is that in the NIN, RH & FLA tracks they serve a clear musical function. Even if you can't make out the words, they tell a story in the context of the track. Give off an emotion. And I don't think your vocals do that. Or at least, not for me.

I know this may come across as if I'm being hyper critical or burning you down. But that's not my intention at all. I'm really just trying to think a long. And offer my perspective. Besides, I'm just a stranger on the internet with an opinion. So if you feel differently that's totally fine and valid, of course. But I do hope this comparison is useful to you somehow.

Absolutely! Thank you for your perspective.

Dude instant favorite.  Like I'm finding it difficult to write a comment as I listen because the track just demands all of my attentions, and I want to give it.  There's so much interesting, and well motivate movement through out.  Great work.

Sometimes less is more. What a trip is it, sounds amazing. Very oldschool vibe. I could nitpick mix a bit, but I know how hard it is to mix while travelling, so I won't big_smile

Another one I would love a full album of tbh.

this rules. i think the vocal delivery works really well, almost Kraftwerk-esque
safe travels,

Your headphones are telling you the truth, this is a great mix. Really line your vocals, has sort of a flat effect like oHgr. Excellent, I wanted it to be longer smile

Inspiring! One person's speedtrash is another person's sick beat!

This is fantastic. Like my fave NIN tracks crashing together with all the delightful vocal and wordplay of Laurie Anderson.

Its not speedtrash, and I'd argue your process here is more akin to running with an inspired idea and letting it manifest quickly and on its own, without stifling restriction, because this - like The Great Destroyer - really feels like a creative seed and key track for a whole concept album.
