Always Have Had

The Immortal Tense.

I welcome all critical feedback.

I started out with the intention to make another dungeon synthwave tune, but I'm feeling this one broke free and ended up being something else. What do you think?

Subharmonicon joins us again this week, in a stereo incarnation that I like to patch through Mutable Instruments Streams. Each sequencer triggers separately so the end result is less crowded that way. Subharmonicon can still easily overpower a song so we dial down the filter cutoff and envelope decay to put it nicely in the background for the second part of the track.

The stereo Moog Mother-32 bass this time around is also patched with external ADSR envelopes so that I can have amplitude sustain while the filter envelope doesn't.

This is my first track made with Live 12 but I haven't really used much of its new capabilities sans the improved MIDI editing (a very welcome addition!).

···

108 BPM 4/4, C-minor. Analog Rytm drums with a mix of TR-707 samples and internal sounds. Moog Subharmonicon arp. Stereo bass with a pair of Moog Mother-32s. Guitar recorded with my Yamaha Revstar. All other sounds Iridium.

Love the very intentional drumming, bass, and diverse and elements at the start forming music but each milking its elements.

Love that rumbling bass hit 1 5 4 into tom tom ttomm tomm epic slow tom drop in.

Inspiring stuff.

It keeps growing throughout in intensity. Really fitting for a cave exploration where the treasure is found at the end of the labyrinth, and the new level starts at the end of the cave.

Really gorgeous track. Forgot I had weeklybeats playing and thought it was something on my spotify. All the synths + FX sound really polished. I particularly like the lead at 1:40 - Iridium?

beautiful!

What a great soundscape! Love how the elements build for the first minute then the toms and synth come in *chefs kiss* . Lots of tasty moog sounds in there. Favoriting!

Really like that rimshot with the big reverb.

Very nice "soundtrack". Would feel at the right place as a sci-fi series generic.

Good exploration music as it evokes a sense of wonder.  The way it builds up really feels like you've gone on an epic journey.

The dungeon synthwave became forest grove synthwave. Technology replaced with mystery, the computers replaced with strange wooden sculptures, machines made way for marshes, but the ghosts are still digital.

Great atmosphere, that reverb and delay is really dialed in nicely. Love when it picks up around 2:15. Awesome mix of sounds! Sounds pro

more enchanted cathedral synthwave than dungeon synthwave, it has a "light side" energy to it that I really appreciate.

great percussion and bassline, mix sounds on point!

Ahhh at 1min30 with those lovely swirly tines I was suddenly in a different space.... a lovely one.... and then another shift just after 2 mins but there's it's those mid-melodic parts and effects that really hold this together. That buzzy bass is the peak for me though - it just disturbs the dreamy soundscape enough to take this somewhere wakeful and unexpected. Really good. I am rambling lol.

wow wow wow. that intro could have gone on for 10 minutes and i wouldn't have been mad.
might be my fave of yours so far this year.  heart

I was getting lost in that intro, great sounds throughout. Yeah I think a different direction than dungeon synthwave, and a good one smile . Up in the clouds on the mountain top, not in the dungeon. Oooh, when goes to double time drums really got me. And then progresses and propels to soaring through the cosmos. Nicely done

This is so delicately crafted and arranged, definitely a track to just get lost in and enjoy. Feels like a journey the whole way through. Looove the warbly melody around 1:30 especially.

Fantastic work!!! Super evocative!!! The little synth stabs near 3:00 really nicely placed -just enough to be barely noticed but also well placed and balanced enough to elevate the portion. Awesome!!!

Awesome track! I really like the way it evolved throughout. I could still feel the dungeon synthwave undertones to it, even if it ended up being something different. Way cool!

That synth bass sounds so goooood.  Fills up the mix nicely especially with the 707 drums that punch thru.  Yeah Live 12 def has some awesome new midi additions.  Been taking me a bit to get used to the layout with the browser but def lookin forward to using it more.  Awesome synth journey!

Wow i am very impressed by the level of the whole mix and composition. All the little touches like this very cool affect at 2:16. The bass is the MVP of this track, it's playing in the back but really brings a lot of groove. Splendid soundscape, perfect panning and mix, hats off to you, this is a masterclass in tasteful composition and excellent production.

lovely

i love how you've spread the melodies out over multiple instruments. everything feels like it has it's own space and counters well. very engaging, loved this!

Alright, so 1 point for "fits dungeon/cave" aesthetic.

OK, so I'm counting this as 1 point for "doesn't fit dungeons".

Can't tell exactly but I'll count this as 1 point for "fits dungeons".

Can't tell whether to count is for or against "fits dungeons". I'm leaving it as "abstain" big_smile

OK, so let's sum up the scores. 3 points for "fits dungeons", 4 points for "doesn't fit dungeons". I'd add my own vote for "fits dungeons", so in the end, we're tied. That means half of the people are wrong! But which half? big_smile

Sci-fi dungeons can be a thing!

A dungeon is what you make of it. In some settings, even a kitchen can be a dungeon. I guess the better question is not whether it fits a dungeon, but what dungeon it fits.

Really dig the percussion 🤘
