We did it!! Congratulations to all of us that made it through 52 tracks and through this year that has been incredibly trying and difficult. It was a lot harder a lot of the time to think about writing music, but it was still necessary even if it was a chore. This track is a little melancholy, a little hopeful, and samples a couple of the first few weeklybeats tracks. While I wish it could be longer, more anthemic, and more encompassing, I only had a week to write it. ;]
I was overly ambitious at the start of the year (mentioned in the forums a year ago here), aiming to make a VJ loop per week, sorta like I did in 2018 on Instagram, but that didn't happen. I'm just happy I made it through it all. I feel like this year had less exploration, but maybe after some time away, I will think differently. I refined my template and kept trying to start tracks for what I hope to be 2 EPs next year. I am sure I'll go back and harvest parts and sections to push toward that goal.
I admit I don't think I'm going to do Weeklybeats2022 assuming it comes around. I know the exercise over the years has made me a better composer and engineer, allowing me to explore and experiment - but I really want to move away from folders for years and months with project files just of the dates/BPMs (which will still always be there for organizational purposes!), but to focus on albums and releases, and new efforts to organize and build toward that intentionally and directly, rather than amassing a lot and compiling afterward, which has been my process more often than not.
2020 was incredibly draining, with much of our lives and livelihood shelved. It has been uncomfortable with my role at work as essential staff, although it has brought a lot of positive attention to my team and area. But that was where a lot of my energy and mental health was focused, so I sort of feel my capacity to explore and create more was limited by this. Despite it all, I am enthused to have also accomplished:
- Releasing Black Burst Generator, my full-lengther IDM album that I had been working on for the past 4 years off-and-on.
- Performing in February and later editing/releasing the audio-visual collaboration with suture, Light Sleeper, Heavy Dreamer.
- Releasing my 2 most energetic and fun remixes so far, I Ya Toyah - Give Me More Lies (royb0t Remix) and Slighter - Wirehead (royb0t Remix).
- And of course, completing Weeklybeats 2020 with you all!
Thanks to everyone for listening and commenting across the year! I wish everyone health and success and happiness in 2021 and beyond! :]
