My Nostalgia is Broken

By roboctopus on February 26, 2012 8:22 pm

I either had a very productive week or an unproductive one, depending on how you look at it.  I started three songs.  I like them all and plan to complete them.  However, at the end of the week, none of them were finished >_<

So here's the most complete one!  Sunday afternoon I rather hastily recorded some guitar parts for this, so apologies for the wonky one-take improvised guitar solo-- there's a key change-y bit, and it was kind of dodgy to play over without practice, since I'm not a particularly technical guitar player.

The idea with this track was to take a sweet, nostalgic sort of melody and have the composition sort of wheel off into stranger territory before at last returning to the saccharine bit.  I didn't get so far as to write the second half and the return, so it's a bit... I think you'll get the idea though.

I will say, I'm pleased with the bass in the second half.  Hand-drawn saw + detuned narrow pulse one octave above.  LSDJ can put out some really cool bass if you give it the space to do so.

Wow, that second half give me serious "Moving Pictures" Rush vibes.

This is really moving. I love that journey into foreign keys and how you handled those, especially since it was improvised. Great job on this'un.

super chill work man :]] Really diggin these vibes

even if you think the guitar is mad slops..you have to admit that it adds to the atmosphere of that particular part!

your guitarchip is the best. so mellow and placid. that bass is unbelievably good, wow....i should hand-draw more often

So awesome.

Robox Zappa

Oh, robodude, mah robodude, how can I love you and hate you as much at the same time?

this works well

good chords! if you finish it you better link in the forums or something ;o

mmmmm,so awesome!!!!

yummy tasty bits

Thanks guys!  I appreciate it.

@Handcannon, yeah, I left the sloppy guitar in because it was *like* what I wanted to go there, haha.
@Parallelis, hand-drawn waves are how I usually get the best bass sounds from LSDJ.
@zebra, I'll post the track whenever it's finished!

i love me a raw guitar take!

One of my favs so far.  Cool blending of chiptune sounds with guitar.  Great inventive chord progressions and rhythm. Lovin it!

very cool, like it!

I think the guitar adds a lot to an already really good track. fadeouts are kinda lame though (but sometimes very hard to avoid)

@george bowles - haha, I know what you mean. The fadeout is lame. The finished song definitely won't have one. wink

Day later, still loving this track.
