I never got the call (but I heard the sound)

By roboctopus on February 1, 2026 7:45 pm

Another LSDJ with vocal and synth samples. This one is closer to how I am imagining the finished album, because I added a second gameboy. Mostly to fill out the low end since using the WAV channel for mostly samples is kind of stealing my bass haha. I'll probably flesh out the 2nd LSDJ part a bit more, but I like where it is sonically.

this time, I'm singing along with my computer kid alter-ego haha.

This is a hardware recording--2xlsdj just mixed to stereo and recorded. It might be a lil noisy.

Lyrics!

I never got the call
but I heard the sound
and I'm not here at all
but I am still around

I never caught the knife
but I held it twice
I never saw the sun
but I survived the night

Love the stuttery mix! Love how the vocal samples feel, elevates the whole track. That sudden cut at the end is perfect too smile

Oh yeah the 2nd GB really does make a huge difference! Looking forward to evolution of this sound

> samples is kind of stealing my bass

How dare they!

The wave bass on the second dmg does add a lot of texture, yeah. Also, those claps, I reckon?

Very paraxodical lyrics.

I dig the start/stop nature of this tune.   Great work.  How are you processing your vocals?

It's so cool that you've found this sound for yourself and you're delivering consistent results every week. Really cool to watch this unfold.

The 4-bit sample playback still has so much potential, it's crazy what you can do with it. Can't wait to hear the album! big_smile

Many musicians - me included - dream of having such a recognizable signature sound. Well done!

Super inspiring stuff! Great work with the samples smile

Thanks! The sudden cut was just because that was where that pattern ended right before a bank of kill commands and I decided it seemed appropriate haha.

Yeah, filling out the low end under the scratchy samples goes a long way I think.

Damn bass stealing samples! The claps are on the main DMG with the rest of the samples actually. The 2nd LSDJ is sort of sparse here. Really just providing bass and a bit of extra pulse texture. The tune sounds pretty complete on the one I think. Just...not very bassy haha.

Vocals are processed through a pitch shifter (pitch up 1 octave) and then a formant shifter (down about 10 half steps.) This tune mixes my natural vocals with the processed ones at times.

This year will mark 20 years since I started LSDJ, so I'm pretty pleased to have come up with a new approach after this long haha.

Didn't get a chance to listen last week. But that means I get to listen to 2 new songs from you this week!

Like others have commented, you have a really unique and instantly recognizable sound.

The 2nd gameboy makes a big difference. Is the plan to do that with the other songs for the album?

I have to say, I love your other songs exactly as they are! But keen to hear how they change if you add the second gameboy!

Those chords!!! Absolutely addictive. This track would have done numbers in the blog house era for sure. 2x LSDJ sounds great here! Keen to hear more!

Aaaaand I need to add a second comment because the ending of this track just got me so goooood! The instant cut halfway through the lyric??? Perfect
