Calm Before the Storm

By rdomain on July 13, 2014 8:00 am

I've started work on patching ideas for my first live modular performance.  I'm very happy with the concepts and sounds I've come up with so far.  This is a document of my progress thus far.

One take.  No edits from this excerpt.

A very rich palette of sounds! Impressive.

And the storm would be.. the performance?

Thanks Jim.  The storm is more referring to the sound of the track.  A storm teaser if you will.  Kind of a teaser for the gig too  smile

Loving your modular sonic offerings .. you going to drag your gear up to the EMU studio? I will be there if so!

Cheers Tim!  If there's an offering of any sort to do so.... sure!  It'd be a good listening environment for a performance.  I've got my first modular gig booked for September so lock that one in.  I'll post details on the r.domain fb page closer to the date  smile

I'm hoping to document the build of the patch today which I can post later.  Documenting is a laborious task but sometimes necessary esp to attempt re-creation at a later stage.

Wow!
This is a modular? Incredible! Can you read music? I assume so. Just wondering if you've ever/would ever attempted notated works of this nature?

This is one of my favourites of yours man.

This for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXqvBvOXV3U

Yep.  All modular!  The reverb is from a Space pedal though but is essentially modular by design.  Yes I can read music.  My main profession is instrumental tuition at various schools and colleges.  I have seen that notation before actually.  I've never attempted it myself.  Not sure if I would either.  hehe.  I find it enough of a task to notate my patch designs!  I really dig the concept though and find many forms of alternate music scoring of interest.

And thanks heaps!  It's a very promising and powerful patch already.  I'm halfway through documenting it.  Next stage will be further patching for real time fx/parameter manipulation via the Teleplexer.  smile  Then further refinements to the overall patch for mixing options within the system.  I've managed to create some Ryoji Ikeda sounds too with this one!

Yes, this is definitely a patch to pursue and retain and work the hell out of! Excuse the ignorance - but keyboard interface for the modular? I really have no idea about such things. And by inference, you're a pianist?

so impressive! Can't imagine more beautiful bleeps. I think it's great that you share your ideas and progress. Would love to see your live performance! Is there a chance to get a video live stream? :-)

Indeed!  As for a keyboard interface, some people set up a traditional keyboard as an interface which is the 'east coast' philosophy.  Apparently I'm more 'west coast'.  I don't want to use a traditional interface because I want to take the music and sounds into new realms so I find using a non-traditional interface more inspiring for experimentation and creativity.  In the photo at the top, my interface is the bottom row (black) of the right side of the rig.  All the copper plates are touch sensitive interfaces where you become a part of the circuit.  I only used the 2 x Pressure Points which gives me 8 'keys' to play.  The Rene gives me another 16 touch interfaces which I used after the track's edit.  Both can act as a sequencer also esp the Rene which is a cartesian sequencer.  Very awesome bits of gear.  Super flexible and excellent for real-time control and performance.

And no, I'm not a pianist.  My specialties are guitar and bass.  smile

Thanks man!  I think if anyone can learn anything from what I share, great!  The thing with modulars though, I could set this same patch up again later and it won't be the same.  Move one knob by a millimeter and it can change a sound completely.  It's a very conceptual and exploratory medium for me which is another reason why I love it apart from the sounds being amazing.  As for a live stream of the gig, that would be fantastic but unfortunately internet in Australia is pretty average.  I will endeavour to film the performance which I'll be sure to share online  smile

Wow, really cool stuff and thanks for sharing your setup and the pressure point stuff. I haven't seen that stuff before. Intriguing!

Thanks and not a problem!  The PP are definitely a great interface for cv control.  If you haven't got any modular gear and you're planning on getting into it, beware.  $$  It's a slippery slope.  So addictive but it's so awesome.  No regrets here!  big_smile   You could try to limit yourself to only getting to a certain size but I couldn't do it. haha.  Totally a great idea to only buy a minimal amount at a time so you can learn each module inside and out.  This is definitely the most rewarding way.

For those interested in the patching documentation.  Take note that these notes don't involve knob and switch positions for most part! It does include notes for the second movement which is where this recorded version cuts.  I've taken a series of photos for replication purposes.  Even then though, it won't be the same.  Part of the beauty of modular synthesis.  It forces creativity and experimentation.  heart

The master clock is actually coming from the A-147 VCLFO. Frequency on full in LFO mode for the beats as a start. For the first movement (melodic ambience) I’m using the DPO and E350 as the main sound sources being played via the PP. All filtering via Optomix and PB noise via Z-DSP fb loop.

PP - T-Gates multed and going to Maths Chan 4 Trig in and Optomix Chan 1 Strike in.  Row 1 is going to the Quantimator In.
Quantimator Out 1, 2 and 3 are going to 1v/oct of DPO chan 1, 2 and E350. Trig In is fed from a multed /4 from the RCD.
DPO Sine out 1 and 2 are going to Optomix In 1 and 2. Angle cv’ed via Math Chan 1 Signal out multiple.
E350 Morph Y is cv’ed from Math Chan 1 Signal out.  XY Out is going to MTX expander In.  MTX Out is going to Optomix Aux In.
Optomix Chan 1 Control from Math Chan 4 Signal Out???. Chan 2 Control from Math Chan 4 Signal Out multiple. Optomix out to Z-DSP. Z-DSP FB out to PB In.  PB Out to Z-DSP FB In.  Add to taste.  Z-DSP to Space pedal on Blackhole.  See photos for module settings.

Some performance notes for this melodic ambient section in reference to Live Modular Sounds.mp3.  I started with FM cranked on the DPO while playing the PP. Tweak Z-DSP delay times. Then roll off FM on the DPO and set lush delay and reverb for more ambient section. Tweak Optomix Control settings to adjust drone amount. E350 is manually controlled for volume via the MTX. Introduce dub noise from the PB via the feedback loop Input of the Z-DSP.  Drones can be shut off when going to the next movement via the Optomix Control knobs.

Second Movement. Either fade in the beats etc via the Linix main volume or filter in using the Z2040 and then kill the first movement via Optomix and MTX controls or pull Optomix patch lead out.
4MS RCD is clocked from SCM x1. /4 multed to Ping In Right of PEG and to Quantimator Trig in. /6 going to Ping In Left. /8 to Rene XClock In. QCV of the Rene is going to uLFO 1v/oct. +5v Env Left to Grids Map Y (knob 11 o’clock). +5v Env Right to Z2040 FM in (knob near 3 o’clock).

uLFO Saw, Tri and Sine Shaped to ins 1, 2, 3 of SSM.  FM1 to 1>Comp of SSM. FM2 to A151 O/I, PWM to A-147 Sine out, Sine Mod to A-147 Triangle out. Lin on switches.
SSM Step/Gate to A-147 Saw out, In4 to A101-2 LPG Out. A101-2 LPG In to Braids Out (Braids set to FOLD and pitched manually). DAC 1:2 to A151 Trig In.  2, 3 and 4 >Comps to A151 I/01, I/02, I/03.  This allows for FM2 variation on the uLFO.  Outs 1, 2, 3, 4 to Linix In 1, 2, 3, 4.  Linix Out to Z2040 In.  Z2040 Out to Z-DSP ins multed.   Dragonfly card.

Beats.  Grids is clocked from the SCM x2.  SCM is clocked from A147 Square out.  Grids Out 1, 2 and 3 are going to 808 BD, SD and OH triggers. (no OH outs yet???) BD and SD Outs are multed to the 5-Pulsar In. 5-Pulsar Out to A103  In. A103 Out to Linix In 5.

All module switch/knob settings can be referenced from photos or just tweak to taste.  More patch development to come!

Great track, I'm impressed by both the patch and the music you make with it.
(I second the request for a video stream of the live performance, btw.)

Thanks for the feedback!  Appreciated.   If no live feed, definitely a video of the performance later  smile

Beautiful (and at times menacing)

This is so bleeping sweet to listen to.

Wow suhweet sounds and textures.  I love the reverb/delay in the middle, it's like a rain drop smile  nice job!

Thanks mate.  Appreciated!

Great take! Beyond the crazy and beautiful sounds, I like the resulting overall musical form!

Thanks!  I'd have to admit I'm very happy with how it's taking form.  Shouldn't be a drama to fill and 30 minute set.  Can't wait to hear the modular through a decent PA  smile
