Rust Buster - Stage 1 (OPN/YM2203 ~technically~)

Going for that PC88/98 Shmup vibe.

Haven’t really written any new songs since the end of WB2024 so definitely have a good amount of Rust to work off.

Made with Deflemask Mobile in the NEOGEO/YM2610 module using only 3 fm and all 3 SSG channels.

1/17/2026 -
note that the FM patches in this were ripped from the NEC PC 88/98 game “Briganty: The Roots of Darkness”
The track Townscape in particular

wow, i love these instruments and the composition is on point as well! fantastic work, sir!

Excellent stuff.

So good, the whole composition is great, but the melody/leads are simply amazing.

I used last week to comment on how good your beatboxing is. Now I can use this week to say how in awe I am that you do all of this on your phone. Wonderful!

Sounds just like a 90s shmup, I love it.

daaamn super nice !!!

That bass sounds so good. Great track 🐎

Sweet melody! I second people's compliments on the lead, and I love the grit in the beat. Awesome work!

love the melody, it soars from the beginning.  The bass that follows is extra addictive.  Stage complete!

The bass makes it, but that lead absolutely sets the tone. I'm having flashbacks to missing that ONE POWERUP I needed to make it this time...

In that case, you NAILED it.  The bass alone makes it sound so legit.

The vibes are definitely there
and they are good

The FM lead and bass tie well together and the SSG holds down the rythm. Definitely hit the Shmup target your were aiming for.

The nostalgia runs deep on this one! Nailed it.

Got me dancing in my seat!

I love PC88/98 and I love this. Great work!! Really hits the spot.

Delightful!

Waaaah this makes me want to play games! Got my heart racing as soon as it started. When the bit kicks in at 0:32 I get goosebumps. Inspiring stuff.

Thanks all for the kind words! Was a partly worried that this was gonna sound a bit under baked but have been proved wrong. There may be a Stage 2 on the horizon.
Also I forgot to note that the FM patches in this were ripped from the NEC PC 88/98 game “Briganty: The Roots of Darkness”

Oh gee thanks! Was feeling the most shaky on the lead melody so this is grand to know! And PSG percussion is pretty fun to make.

Thanks, super glad you enjoyed it. amazing what a 2nd channel delay can do for a melody, takes it from running to flying. The stage may be complete but the journey continues!

Luckily this is not one of those shmups that punishes you for makin’ that kinda mess up so you’ll have a chance this time around.

Thanks! It was fun to repurpose these patches from an action adventure game for a different vibe.

But never going so deep to be lost in the nostalgia. Was a bit worried I’d hammer my thumbs instead so glad to know my aim was true!

Games is good, can’t help but play em’! Wasn’t sure about that section at first until I made the bass and percussiin double time, then it clicked! Thanks!

Top notch, mate. It it was back in the day, it would fool me. Props!
