Through the Black Hole

By RawTicks on February 8, 2014 3:38 pm

After last week failed voice + mixing + mastering mathcore attempt, I decided to get back to electronic beats and tried to work on textures and sound design and getting a better sense of space in the mix. I usually try to work with a concept in mind but this week has been a bit improvised in terms of composition, going with the flow, picking up sound sources here and there and making a sound collage. I recorded old Octatrack beats, fired up the modular to create drones and random electronic percussions sounds, used a Max patch I made to create a beat using chaotic and complexity notions, sequenced the Volca Keys with Ableton, etc. Everything assembled in Live. It's been great fun to work like that. I'm starting to feel more and more confident with Ableton too (which I only got about 2 months ago), and the workflow is getting a bit faster.

Anyways, there's a lot going on in this track, and I'm quite satisfied with how it turned out, mixing and mastering included (yay!). I used recently acquired Toneboosters plugs all over the place; they sounds quite fine to me!

As always, any comment much appreciated.

one of my favorite tracks so far in a strong week, nice work!!

thinking about getting that track essentials bundle plus the reel to reel emulator, would be like 45 euros

awesome. feel reminded of ruxpin, aphex twin, boards of canada. very good stuff!

Beautiful textures!

awwwwwwesome sounds!!! Great tunes and extremely nice mix on top! Fav!

Thanks a lot everyone!

Love it ! Particularly the low freq sounds. Autechre-ish ! Great work man !

early warp records vibes for sure. great, great work! Live is so great for those who like to work with hardware once you really get into the workflow. i sequence my analog synths with ableton all the time - i typically bounce to a separate audio track and record knob tweaks/etc during the bounce.

I love how you got the combination of catchy and quirky just right, so that the music is accessible but complex at the same time.

Couldn't agree more! I love the way that both your production and arrangement skills allow the more complex elements to sink in almost subconsciously while my ears enjoy the mellow textures - very impressive indeed!

damn some really cool organic autechre-ish type sounds and folds and just plain awesome glitchiness.  That main bassy fade-in-out sound really draws me in. Liquid gooey goodness! smile

Awesome shifting percussion and yeah def here the early Ae clatter-goodness here, nice one

This is most excellent. I love the clickin' and clackin' and fantastic texture. Well done, RawTicks!

i thought it was autechre for a moment

Great track, love how the track keeps shifting and evolving, agree with others reminds me of Autechre

mega crazy! I like it!

Awesome track man.  Excellent usage of various sound sources.  You have now made it into my weekly artists I'll listen to  smile

The complexity still somehow sounds soothing and in flow, and I'm just how brilliantly you brought in that break amuses me. Some reverbed drones / short-synth stuff could be more than welcome in that middle section.  Brilliant work, much enjoyed, downloaded and faved. roll

Many thanks everyone! Glad you enjoyed it!

I agree it's kind of breaking with the rest but that was intentional. It was the unstable, chaotic, "no landmark", destabilizing moment of "going through the black hole". smile

Thats why it still sounds perfect. big_smile Those were just my wild-ideas, nevermind. wink

Thanks! I appreciate your wild ideas btw, and please keep posting them, because most of the time I just don't really know why I'm doing things in a certain way. Making music arrangement for me is always a fight to get things to go from one place to the other in a somewhat logical, smooth way. Getting everything done in a week doesn't let much time to take a break and come back to it later and correct obvious errors and stuff like that. That's why I like getting input from others!

I love how everything kind of "falls apart" leading into the middle of the song. The structure feels loose but the percussion feels very tight and punchy which is a nice contrast. Everything feels very tangible, sounds great played loud!

tasteful sound design
