FEARLESS

By RajaTheResidentAlien on August 28, 2022 11:59 pm

Finally finding my 'real' voice... this one sounds pretty close to how i talk in real life(edit: i mean in terms of voice-tone and accent, that is... haha, not the wording/subject-matter big_smile)... i think i was more careful to run multiple takes of the voice til it felt just right... i'm realizing it takes practice so that i can just relax into it(otherwise, i end up reaching with weird accents and tone), so much more practice needed but hopefully getting closer to something natural-sounding smile
This one made with renoise, and a little max/msp(that opening loop that goes throughout is the same old secret 'timbral morph' thing i do... here melding a synth with a drum beat), and then same as other tracks i've done: aalto synths, vcv rack drums, valhalla reverbs("room" and "vintage"), sampled drums, bass, and guitar(this time i tried a little slide guitar too, but i lost my slide awhile back so i tried a brass candle-holder, and then settled on this XLR-to-1/4-inch adapter which is why you might hear two different tones of slide near the beginning; oh and an apple dongle which had a curved surface for the highest slide later in the song… funny story: I woke a baby downstairs with that high-slide part, it cried in terror for a few minutes, so I grabbed the best take I could and then stopped trying with the slide guitar big_smile).

Here's the lyrics.. Verse1:
Fearless, breaking free from all i've been
In darkness the light grows fierce within
Feel this hallowed realm of pain
Turn to bliss by sacred kiss of rain.

Heedless, falling fast as we can run
Needless as counting ways we've come undone
Shear this freedom from the fallen ones
So fearless, fearless, falling to the sun.

Chorus:
Fearless, i would die fearlessly
So fearless as is my destiny.
Fearless, how i long to be
So fearless, the way we were meant to be.
Fearless, i would die fearlessly
So fearless as is my destiny.
Fearless, you've come home to see
I left fearless as you cried out for me.

Verse2:
Secrets could never keep a home
But bleed this, blood's where the truth is sown
Hear this calling out with a violent rage
Don't fear this heart too bright for throwing shade

Know us by what we've consecrated
Feelings, these feelings would never fade us
Witness the star's awake in endless dawn
So fearless as woke as the day they were born

(Repeats chorus)

Thanks for listening! heart
[Edit: barely made the upload - saw the countdown tick 2 seconds and then everything was live... phew! Cheers to synchronicity! big_smile]

Okay I really did not expect either of those from how natural the end product sounded.
(On second thought, maybe "natural" isn't the right word).

Damn, that falsetto was a pleasant surprise. Nailed the vocals! Wow.

This line really stuck out to me. Love it:

Secrets could never keep a home

This is incredible. Cool dub vibes and breakbeats and vocals and guitar and... everything. Just awesome.

Lots of cool sounds in here and your vocals sound great!

Great song- I dig the vocals. The whole tension throughout is awesome

So very appreciate this! (haha: i edited my description, wrote it too fast, i just meant the tone/accent is how i sound normally big_smile and yes, my water-cooler conversation can get pretty fearless too "this is not water! tis a ploy! to get humans to pay for what comprises 80% of their body-weight to begin with, and did you know most water is foreign to the Earth! damn this conspiracy, all the horrible news to push us in fear of what's alien, just to pay to consume the alien substance that appears most naturally in our bodies! rise up and revolt my fellow employees! revolt fearlessly against the fear-mongers who make you pay for water not to mention the coolant to keep it at some unreasonable temperature! LIES! FEAR the lies! STEAL the water fearlessly!"... oh sorry, i went off on a tangent there... Thank You Again! heart

Thank You Immensely! Ya, the tension really fed my inspiration on this one, truly grateful it came out in this creative form heart

Much Love And Gratitude To All heart heart

Supported by your tune I will now start my Monday diving into my email.

The vocals are a great match for the musical style, man. I really enjoyed this.

Absolutly fantastic track. the instrumental work is awesome alone. how you managed to top it with these vocals is top-notch. Your voice fits perfectly into the track. It reminds me of Nick Cave. I love your guitar inserts. very very well done.

I love this a lot. The fact that the guitar sits so perfectly on that delightful break work yet also sounds like it would fit in a Tarantino film is already my seal of approval. But what I love the most is the level of the vocals: strong and intentional and convincing (that’s my preferred word, as it suits a multitude of aesthetics). I love your voice, it’s got character and you got chops. Excited to see this come through. This feels like a milestone, so congrats. smile

Wow, this sounds so complete for a weeks work, great lyrics and continue with the vocals, that first bass hit is so deep, really like the dubby feel on this one especially the use of guitar and great drum programming.

Happy to serve! Hope that email proved less daunting and you rose above, fearless! to slay such formidable foes big_smile

Thank you so much! Ya: dub/reggae was the original style that got me into electronic music and such(Lee Scratch Perry, Mad Professor, etc.), all that echo, all that wailing, comes naturally smile

Immense appreciation for your feedback, I pushed it out giving it my all, truly grateful it carried impact. Thank you! heart

Yea! I love that slide guitar, plus dub style… Tarantino/Morricone/Jamaican-dub style is my fav big_smile I’ll have to do some more like this for sure: definitely a milestone. Thank You!! heart heart

Thank You Infinitely! It’s true, it feels more complete than i’ve ever been able to accomplish within a week(and that too: started on Thursday, worked beyond midnight, Thurs./Fri./Sat. then uploaded at the last few seconds of the last minute on Sunday lol)… Renoise helped quite a bit(i feel naturally fast with trackers even though i couldn’t claim to be as expert as most at it, it seems the workflow is just faster/more-organic by nature), and then there’s the fact it was only three chords in the progression, and the same progression runs throughout… just with different register on the voice to delineate chorus from verse(i thought of adding a bridge-section, but decided against it as i had my eye on the clock and a fierce determination to see this one through), and finally, dub style comes naturally to me(albeit, the drums are a bit more dense than i’ve normally done for that style). Overall, was just organic in its fierce determination, and its fun big_smile

Thank You Again And Again, Everyone! heart heart heart heart heart

I love how the shifting, phasing accompaniment paint this uneven and foreboding landscape for spooky or even dangerous things to lurk in. It makes the fear more grounded, less hypothetical. And therefore the fearlessness of the chorus more strident and bold.

I love how you use the bass on the track and how it works with the breakbeat. Listening to the different layers make me wonder what genre this is and I love it. It borrows unashamedly from reggae, jungle, jazz, this is a wonderful festival. I could hear that as the main theme for a moody 90s David Lynch movie. It is tasty, original, wonderfully executed.

The singing on this track is also fantastic! This track is one of my favorites Weekly Beats 2022 tracks!

Woah really cool dub/trip hop-like feels throughout this track.  That bassline sounds so nice in the mix.  The panned drum fills that flutter in and out even better. Your vocals are a nice touch to complete the track.  Also congrats on hitting the game winning shot with :02 secs left smile sw00sh!

Great work! There is a lot to discover in this track, my favorite kind of art always offers something new when approached from different views/listens, which I think you’ve accomplished here.  I’ve been taking in a lot of 90’s music and movies recently, and was reminiscing on how much genre blending was going on during that decade, so this gels well with the headspace if been in!  Also, great voice and phrasing, getting some cool Nick Cave and Roy Orbison vibes!

This is glorious. The levels of detail in the song really do reward multiple levels. Also interesting to read about the number of tools you're using. This reminds me vaguely of something from Kill Bill, but I can't remember what (and can't be bothered looking it up).

That's such an excellent description, really jives with how i felt through the sections while producing it too, thank you so much!

Deepest, warmest, heartfelt Thanks for this! I'm truly honored it's one of your favorites, too(certainly one of my best so far, really grateful to hear you felt it that way as well). Truly grateful for your feedback(i really love your music as well, and then i also feel for the magical haunt of David Lynch works, too), such high praise heart

I so very appreciate this feedback(was slightly worried the bassline might be too present, i tend to do that sometimes, especially thrilled you felt it worked well in the mix.. i love that bass big_smile). Haha, swOOsh indeed, such a magical experience of presenting something i worked pretty hard on, like it was meant to be smile

So honored it came off with Nick Cave and Roy Orbison vibes... i definitely feel the 90s were some formative years for me(but then again, so were the 60s, 70s, and 80s, haha.. hard to tell sometimes)... i really appreciate this!

Thank You! I tried to listen thru some kill bill recently after reading your comment, haha, so much of it could have influenced my style, not sure...(i do like that Nancy Sinatra "Bang Bang" song... but then there was Johnny Cash's 'Satisfied Mind' on Kill Bill 2)... so you never know. big_smile Grateful to hear it had that general feel, though, i love ALL that music heart

Immense Gratitude From The Bottom Of My Heart To All For This Feedback heart

Love the vocals on this. The whole track and vibe really reminds me of something, I just can't quite figure out what now. Anyway, really cool track.

i really like your vocals raja & i'm glad to hear you are getting more comfortable!!! YES!!!
this sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!  your voice is so engrossing you almost miss all the detail happening so the space at the end was a nice touch - it's all so lovely and fits so well together - the dreamy slide guitar/swoon

Hell yeah, really cool track. The vocal performance is very massive-attack-ish in it's chill delivery. The drums on this track are great too, they have a lot of complexity while keeping the track grounded with that bassline.
