findland mashup

By Q-Rosh on May 26, 2024 12:50 pm

this song was made with two findings on the garbage this week. it started with a vinylrecord from finnland, which I rescued from the rain, on which different folkloristic songs, probably from the 70ies, were presented. I liked what I could listen to, and I decided to sample some of the best parts. the next thing I found was an edrum from logitech, which was usable with guitarhero, (do you remember?? 90ies-00?) a drumset to be used with the TV-screen.
I found out how to connect this simple plastic-toy with the computer. just had to find a bluetooth Wii- controller, install the osculator plugin to set the MIDI channels in the ableton drumrack and had a horrible latency problem.(and the pads responded not accurate, nor there was a velocity) but somehow it was cool and unpredictible. better results I had with an alesis dm5 drumrack, which worked correct, no latency and even had simple velocity. the sounds are very 90ies and rockish. nevertheless, I had to record something, but I had so many samples with different grids, so that I had to play freestyle. in addition to that, I recorded my analog drums in the basement and warped them to the finnland loops. it was very complicated and time consuming to mix all those recordings with different tempi into one track. I also played guitar with effects and some tones from an early baroque organ record by an anonymous composer.
as I do not understand the language, I hope it is all political correct, what they sing about.

Oooh that one sample has a sort of Spaghetti Western feel to it but then with the contrasting lil flutes you get something totally different.  Love the jazzy drums midway as it shifts gears.  The sample selection and cuts makes me feel like I'm an alien above earth observing humans contribution to music smile  I wish my garbage would give me inspiration.  Instead all I have are samples of kitty litter yikes

Fun usage of the samples.  It makes for a blending of traditional and alien sounds that is really interesting and unpredictable.

Warped is a good term, love the process here especially given the weekly format. I am starting to pull some gear from the racks that have collected dust but haven’t landed on anything I like enough to continue quite yet.

This track feels as if an alien race in the far future had made a zoo out of the human cultures in their beautiful diversity, from folkloric music to experimental electronic music, and if we were to zip through the zoo at fast speed, through these different landscapes. I don't understand the language either. The accordion at the beginning reminded me of french traditional music but the singing is definitely different. The more i listen to folk music, the more i realize how little i know and how much diverse beauty there is out there! Thank you for taking us through this journey and your acts of creation!

hen you roll into the (Q-Rosh) carnival anything can happen
what what say what say what anything can happen

i love this and have listened several times. glad you rescued the music!
i also love the idea of imagining what aliens would make of our earth music. if i'm ever stuck listening to music i don't particularly enjoy, i try to listen through that frame and it helps immensely!
*thankfully i did not have to employ that trick with your wonderful track  smile

*when

Yay you did the Finland Mashup! sounds like quite a process

If you're interested, this is what I can pick up of the singing:

"Armaani, aina sun ainoo mä vaan" my darling, always your only one, I am

"läpi metsien kulki.." Through the forests wandered..

"vain hiljaiseen yöhön..luo loiste" into the silent night.. create shine

"tule, tule tyttöni, hyppely löi(?) ..heiluvat helkat ja vilkkuvat (?) antavat polkalle elämää" Come, come my girl, jumping hit (?) ..shaking skirts and blinking (?) give the polka life

Oh, and the last one is very clear..and very sentimental:

"jos takaisin mä sinut saan, vain kerrankin, saat sydämen. Taas aukaisen, sut sisään vien, pois päästä en" if I can get you back, even once, you'll get my heart. I'll open again, bring you inside, won't let you go

love the carnival of q-rosh image - that fits
really fun & interesting track q-rosh!

This is a marvelous piece!! That elevates each part of its sources to something beyond this world! Reminds me of The Caretaker. But more whimsical and avantgarde. Great dumpster diving with the variety of Finnish and WHAT DRUMS heart

wonderful , thank you very much for the translation.
I knew it meant something lovely. The record had so many nice moments, but I only took a little choice of samples. It was fun digging in an unknown territory.

Some brilliant sampling, fun to sample vocals for there sound without knowing what is being said, but now after reading the translation above it sounds even better.  Very interesting and enjoyable entry this week, the transitions with the different drums makes me feel like you are changing stations on a radio.

this is a cool pastiche! It remains well balanced and engaging throughout. nice one here!

i agree with many of the above comments, very cool and interesting project. i love where it gets a bit dark and woozy around the middle section.

I am deeply offended by those lyrics!

haha, kidding, I don't speak the language. It sounds cool.

Oh wait, I see translations from Minnamari above, amazing!

Love this mashup, mish mash, exploration absolution best day at the crazy carnival from the magical would called Findland you have going here. The fat beat you add underneath is nice.
So much fun things for the ears to chew on, and maybe a little different than many of your weeklies, so that's exciting.

This was such a near idea that you executed perfectly. You were able to blend together so many different styles of music seamlessly.

What a fun romp of kookiness.  So cool finding old records to sample.  I've done a bit myself but haven't released any of that material.  An epic sonic journey here!
