phliip x luke hodgkin - process

By phliip on April 5, 2020 7:43 pm

I've really enjoyed making this during the week. I feel that one week isn't long enough to explore all of the things that are possible with this piece. I've been wanting to change the weekly beats format for a while now; so that I have a track that I can hold on to; and refine for multiple weeks.

When I completed Weekly Beats before; it was one of the proudest moments of my life, and it definitely made me the producer I am today.

But I've got a problem; I feel like I'm just exporting some random tracks floating around on my hard drive; rather than taking the time to craft something; polish it and properly complete it.

When I did weekly beats before; it saved me from perfectionism by challenging to do 1 track a week.

But now; that is not as much as a challenge; and while I can keep the pace - I don't feel like I am achieving what I want creatively.

So today - I'm sharing the process. This is an unfinished track; and I want to come back to it with my homie next week and compose whole new elements and really explore the things we can do with it.

Also; if you are reading this and like the track; feel free to get in touch. This is an open invitation to any producer or musician who wants to contribute to this project.

I don't really know where it is going. All I know; is I want to complete it to the best of my ability; and really take my time with it... This is where we managed to get with it this week... I look foreword to sharing more of the journey with it next week :-)

xXx

Shouldn't take you long to make this a complete piece.  Lots of great ideas in there.  Love those rolling bass 808 type bass lines.

Yo! Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it... Three weeks later; we're still working on it...  I posted the latest version this week; but I might give it a break for the next one... I can't tell if I am pushing myself as a producer; or wasting time over thinking it... but I'm willing to find out... hope you had a good week!

Hi, Phliip! I feel you when you talk about the achievement of completing Weeklybeats, and at the same time, not completing other ideas. I myself have been doing this from 2012 but haven't released a single album or EP. It's always "later when I could sit and make a selection"... So I really respect the choice you're taking.

I'm coming here from version 3, so I'll have a careful listen and give my overall impressions, if they could be of any use to you.

There are really good ideas here. I want to see where it is all going smile

I totally dig it... I had the same idea about making a selection; but never really got round to it either. Right now I just want to finish a piece to the highest level of my current ability; and that is really making me push myself; and giving me a lot of inspiration for the more spur of the moment weekly projects too...

Would always appreciate your feedback and love seeing this kitty every time it pops up!! Yeah I definitely remember you from the OG weekly beats peeps; I'm glad you are still here!

until next time!

Looking foreword to hearing what you've done this week!!
