LAMENT

By PeterM on June 23, 2024 11:49 pm

Another sketch of an idea I've been working on.

I sampled the sound of a feller buncher, which is the machine they use to cut the forests where I live. At night, when they are operating, the sound carries quite a long way and I can here the whine of the blade as it bites into the trees. I felt I needed to incorporate that haunting sound into a lament for the relentless destruction happening here that I bear witness to and wrenches my heart.

The piano and accordion were recorded live and then arranged in the M8.

I might use this as the second movement of a three movement piece of music I've got in my mind ...

Not the usual type of music coming out of the m8! I'm impressed! Thank you!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The M8 is so versatile, eh?

This is sad and beautiful.  The accordion is just a perfect instrument for this kind melancholic dirge.  Such an immersive atmosphere, I was immediately sucked by just the texture of the samples at the beginning.  There is also a midrange, kind if clicking or crackling... that to my ear sounds like lake ice cracking... what is that sound?

Thank you so much! I fussed over the background textures quite a bit trying to get that haunting feeling that I felt when I heard them. In the original recording of the machines working there were these very faint crunching sounds of the heavy treads cracking limbs and of branches snapping as the trees fall. I wanted to bring that forward a bit end I ended up recording snapping some sticks, then pitching them way down to try to mimic larger tree limbs breaking. I struggled to make them sound as distant as the machines, so they were a bit more prominent than I wanted, but I think the effect adds a lot. I'm so glad you picked up on that! Thanks again for listening and leaving such a thoughtful comment.

Well I would for sure chalk that up to "happy little accident", because it being so far forward in the mix is really adds to the quitely unsettling tone... like I mentioned, to my north woods ears it sounded like lake ice cracking... in that "it's fine... its... yeah, it's probably fine..."  ╭( ๐ _๐)╮... which made me instinctively listen closer and with a touch of mild worry... just as a reflex.  I don't imagine everyone would have that same experience, but I do think that where it sits in the mix invites the ear to listen more closely and try to place the sound.  I'm sure most folks have heard cracking sticks... but pitched around and effected, it gives it that "wait... what... is... that" quality, that I think the overall track really benefits from.  Its clear how much care you put into crafting an atmosphere, and it really paid off I think.

OK, I can hear what you mean with the ice cracking! Yeah, I can see how that would carry extra meaning if you spend time on frozen lakes! Now, if only I could mimic that feeling of falling a quarter inch with each crack! Ha ha! But, seriously, thanks for taking the time to share your reactions, it means a lot.

Definitely a very sad song.

Absolutely beautiful, spacious, disquieting, really loved this. I can absolutely imagine it as the second movement of a three part suite. I'd really like to hear that so do make sure you make it available when you do!

Thank you! I'll keep working on the idea and if it hatches, I'll post it here.
