Patience

By Pescadito on February 8, 2026 11:59 pm

This composition started on the classical guitar, standard tuning with a capo on 2nd fret. I started playing with the percussive sound made by my index finger on the fretboard, which you can mostly notice in the first part of the song. I also wanted to explore some harmonic changes that you can achieve with very small moves on the freeboard.

The song is about... patience! and give ourselves a break. Remember that things may take a while to develop and unfold.

I had fun setting up the recording of the classical guitar, which I mad with a mix of two condenser and a stereo mic.
One small diaphragm condenser was placed as close to the top of the fretboard as possible, trying to capture the percussive sound of the hammer-on.
The big condenser was instead pointing at my right hand, with the idea to capture the percussive groove of the arpeggio.
The stereo mic (Zoom H1n) was placed a bit farther to capture a bit of the room sound. The two condensers where pre-amplified with a SPL GoldMike 9844.

I would have love to start earlier (and not at 18 of a Sunday) to be able to record some extra takes and make additional edits. Especially, I would have taken some extra time to be sure to capture a great singing performance. Well, too late (I uploaded at last minute).

So, this is pretty much a rough mix, with very minimal EQ, compression and no time spent on mastering. Most tracks are first takes, no comping. So I will definitely make a new mix of this at some point.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts and I hope you'll still get the idea and some enjoyment out of it.

Here's a quick sketch to show the mic setup for the classical guitar.

EEY WELCOME BACK!!!

lovely chords and playing on the ac guitar - easily my fav part! harmonies flow so nicely into each other, so satisfying! I can hear Levi the drummer making an appearance. Pretty good sound for a rough mix! big fan of the bass! beautiful honest sound on the choir voices - really sounds like a bunch of folks singing together big_smile

cool composition too, always gotta shout out the bridge!!! melody is haunting and feels like it's speaking very directly to the heart, I feel definitely I can learn a thing or two from your lyrics big_smile thanks for making it!

super fun tune, made me smile!

PS: what a good excuse for a week 06 upload big_smile I hope the next one is not called "summer vacation" or something like that haha ;D just kidding, tho always glad to hear your tracks!

Frick, this is good. How'd you record the guitar so well? Really lovely composition and great recording, too.

Opa!

Comfy and cozy! Much needed.

my friend, thanks for listening and the kind feedback! I wanted to publish something in the last month but, as you know, I could not finish some of the stuff I started. This one though came out easily so I just pushed through and I am happy for it.

the bass I had a differnt approach this time, and I played it in a quite busy way on purpose, starting more simple and then getting it busier on the bridge and towards the end. it felt right to me somehow!

the drummer must be one of Levi's cousins! his name is Aidan ahahah

thanks man! I am glad you liked it. I tried something new this time on the classical guitar recording. I wanted to capture the percussion made by the hammer-on that I was doing with my index finger. so, I used a combination of a Small Diaphragm Condenser (SDC) - an AKG C430 - directly pointed at my right hand. I placed it kinda close to the fretboard, maybe 10 cm away, pointing from the up down. the body of the guitar I captured with a Large Diaphragm Condenser (LDC) pointing at the body of the guitar, taking care not to place it in front of the sound hole. I used a BM800 that I bought modded from a self-defined "microphone maniac" found on a second-hand online platform. I then thought to capture a more open sound image from a bit farther away (around 1 - 1.5 m), using a X/Y configuration (Zoom H1n). I then blended the 3 tracks. the analog pre-amp may be a factor too, but my ear are still not so fine tuned nor expert enough to explain the difference.
