An Old Friend

By Pescadito on January 7, 2024 11:03 pm

An improvised guitar piece with some background recordings of a bar in Turin (Italy) and sounds from my cousin’s cat (Tina).

It was nice to play my acoustic guitar again after a long time!

Recorded on my iPhone. Edited with BandLab and I uploaded from an hotel in Barcelona.

I would like to understand: what’s the minimal viable setup for recording while traveling?

I hope next time I will have more time to work on a piece!

Very pretty guitar, the bar samples set the vibe well too.

Wow! LOVE this tune! heart so happy you made it!

Love the appoggiatura theme that comes back after the strumming.
Love the spontaneous chord progression. Very effective and emotional, and good technique! The playing is confident and sounds like it comes from the heart.
Love the full sound of the guitar, that feels like it drowns the background noise, and then lets it come back in on its own when it's over. It makes me think of a magical moment when someone is playing guitar in a random bar and everyone stops to listen, forgetting about their normal life, then going back to it, but healed!

Beautiful warm sound, and quite a solid song shape for improv! I'm going to have to listen back to hear the cat smile thank you

Thanks guys! The cat recordings are only some scratches and eating sounds. So they cannot be heard so clearly.
The guitar is my acoustic Yamaha FG800M tuned in DADGAD

This sounds awesome

Correction: This sounds awesome—I wouldn't have guessed a phone recording could sound that good.  I assumed the background noise at the beginning was either mixed in post or the venue had a mixing desk.

It's week 1 and I'm already learning new words tongue

Very curious to hear what you discover in the pursuit of a minimal viable portable setup. So far it sounds great. I bet you could play with tonality just by positioning the phone microphone closer/farther from a sound source. The background ambience is very comforting.

Loved this!

This is oddly satisfying guitaring.
I think you got the minimal setup already basically. One instrument and one device that can both record and upload, perhaps it can be made even smaller if said instrument was also that device.
