Time (part 2: focus)

By Paisleyfrog on April 12, 2026 10:06 pm

Let's do some fusion.

Photo is my grandfather's pocket watch, and my great-grandfather's glasses. This is the book.

Ended up being a bad week for time to do music, and just mental focus for music at all. Even extending to just listening to music - haven't been able to reply to near as much music as I've wanted to. Y'all are awesome, I'll get to it eventually heart Track is so-named because I just didn't have it this week - thus the glasses in the cover art. Walked around the house and grabbed a few things for the picture.

Since it was a low-time and focus week, I thought it might be be good to revisit the Time idea and the hardpan. I continued with my work on the sampler, and used something RPLKTR mentioned - I sampled the hardpan as both a one shot and multi sampler instance. I then used the MIDI arpeggiator to build some rhythms for it, rather than trying to play it this week (just not enough in the tank for that). As such, I also enlisted a Logic Session Player for the e-piano.

When I finally got to work on it, I started out throwing a lot of stuff at the wall and getting nowhere. A dozen tracks that I was trying sculpt into a song. Dr Frog eventually came down and listened for a bit, and encouraged me to simplify and just vibe...and also that I should use Celtic flute this week. It helped a lot, gave me a direction...I was WAY overthinking. Things started to come together with the bass. I started to think about Chuck Mangione, tracks like Bellavia and Fun & Games (and which is why I went with fusion as the genre).

Got things pretty much settled Saturday morning, and then spent way too much time tweaking the mix Sunday. Flute fought me - it's way breathier than I'd like (which largely comes down to my technique - I'm out of practice). Added the penny whistle last minute on Sunday afternoon, I liked the ending bit of variety. Hope this sounds ok, I didn't get as much time as I'd like to really finalize the mix.

Ultimately pretty happy with the track for not having much in the tank this week. Call it done and let's move on to week 16!

This is so damn happy and joyful. They should play this in elementary schools. I would have been a changed little boy if this were part of my mp3 collection. I really appreciate you didn't use vocals here and leaned into making the flute / handpan combo as wonderful as possible.

Hey, I got the exact same glasses. I inherited them from my grandpa (or his father, to be exact).
I replaced the glasses because my eyes are quite good, but I occasionally wear them because I think they are cool.

*presses play*
For something that started out with being a bad week and no mental focus, this is such a great cheerful track.
I kinda want to boot up Baiten Kaitos again and just vibe in the villages with this track playing.
I totally dig it!

Hey Paisley! Sweet little tune. I like the handpan samples very much. The overall structure and composition of the track are good. It has flow, it has direction and all the good stuff like that.

I do agree that it would have been nice if there was a bit more time for the mix. As it feels a bit wonky in spots. Like the bass in the intro, when it's playing the busy patterns feels a tad loud. While later on it's fine to my ears. Though I think that busy bass part could have been simplified as well. As in, it doesn't make much sense to me in the context of the whole track. That's of course how I hear it, doesn't mean that I'm right about that.

And yeah, I'm with you that flute sounds rather breathy. And maybe has too much reverb on it. Not something I should complain about as I drench my stuff in reverb all the time. lol

It should come as no surprise that I like the idea of the penny whistle variation. Though there were a few spots where the track gave me a unintentional 'jazz stank' face with how it clashes momentarily. But those kinds of imperfections are also what make the track feel human and give it its personality. So well done Mr. Frog! And I hope you'll be in a good headspace again shortly!

Yeah, I am in the same boat about being able to put time into music (and fitness). It has been a couple weeks that I am "slacking off", I feel I need to rest for a while. Not that sitting and compose a bit is too taxing, and this is why I still to the bare minimum to my standards... But yeah, I feel a bit burned out, for once I had nothing planned last weekend, and really didn't do much excepts resting.

Track is very nice, everything sounds at the right place and the time that flies theme is really present.

Well played!

Aww, thank you! At the end of a hard week, leaning into the groove was fun...been too long since I've played much flute.

I would totally wear these glasses too...just a little small for me. It's always interesting to see what other glasses prescriptions do. These make things really clear if the object is six inches from my face. Maybe I could use them for building Gundams...

And thank you heart The focus was really manifesting in not being able to take something in a direction. Dr Frog helped a lot, as did previous comments from electronic tiger smile

Thank you!! I was going back to a few of your past comments about Time (part 1)...ways to break up the structure and keep things moving. I redid an earlier flute take because my energy didn't go up the right way, shuffled things around, and kept things building. I'm quite happy with the structure. Sampling the handpan worked GREAT and allowed me to compensate for its tuning issues better.

Dr Frog would agree with you about the bass (and also the drums). She was suggesting I go with more of a vibe feeling, but I was enjoying a busier groove smile

Mix was odd. Didn't want to compress too much and lose the dynamics. I did a bit of automation on levels to compensate for what you were hearing, but needed more time.

Tone-wise....yeah. Part of it is the flute, which is literally made out of schedule 80 PVC. I didn't make this one, but I have a few others I made out of schedule 40 and breathiness is never too far away. I was a little too out of practice to get good tone from the silver flute. Also was easier to play a flute pitched in D with the handpan smile

Reverb was a bit of a band-aid to help with the breathiness. Also did some EQ notching and de-essing. Rest of the issues are all me smile My attack is inconsistent in lower registers (more difficult on non-Boehm flutes), which is partly why it feels better later on when I climb up the scale.

I really liked the pennywhistle as a final build, but yeah, it clashes at points. It was an afterthought, and the flute was improvised....so I was reverse engineering a harmony part Sunday afternoon. Needed more work, but it's definitely real and human. big_smile I love how flute and whistle sit together, I should try it again in the future with a bit more intention. Maybe Part 3 smile

Love these conversations. Thank you so much!

Thank you heart Yeah, I've been slacking with the gym as well. Going to go tonight with Dr Frog and hopefully get back into the habit. I think everyone has been feeling a little burned out recently - I really love how WB teaches (forces you to accept?) ways to be creative when it's harder because of life. Along those lines, I like that I've found a theme to play with during those weeks - maybe playful, maybe experimental, something to keep ticking with. I'll probably have a Time EP at the end of the year. smile

The flute!!!!
It's always very impressive to keep showing up and submitting when it gets hard, so well done!! Always fun to try something different with those tight deadlines too.
Very nice upbeat tune, lifting my mood going into week 16!!

oh wow! the steel drums are so fun and i love how the celtic flute sounds

This was a very good song to listen to on a sunny morning walk into work. Thanks!

This. is. SO. COOL! Love the chill vibes and LOVE the flute / whistle / pan performances! Seriously awesome work Paisleyfrog, I wish I could pull something like this off on a ‘not much in the tank’ week. 😎

What a beautiful piece! The tone strikes me as joyful and sentimental. I love the bass line, and how the drums are used throughout to add energy to the groove. The flute is so pretty and unique. The way you layer instruments to build momentum and energy in your songs is inspirational!

so joyful and breezy. and very happy to hear those ticks & tocks again heart

What a lovely uplifting feel throughout that builds as if it's saying "everything will be ok".  heart

Mellow, chill, moving. Reminds me of sitting by the lake during dome festival or another, listening to an Argentinian group called Antara del Bario perform, building up a higely enveloping melody from so many quiet parts joining together as, well, a celebration. This song is a celebration. Beautiful.

Awesome performance on all the instruments! I think you've made an amazing composition, and mixed it together wonderfully. Loving the handpan sounds throughout the track - can't hear sounds like that and not think of the movie Captain Ron, and somehow the thought/vibe of that gels with the other parts for me as well.

Thank you! I'm enjoying experimenting more this year, trying to grab different instruments. Flute was the first instrument I picked up when I started my instrument learning jag some 30 years ago - I don't play it nearly enough anymore, I need to fix that smile

Thanks! I like how the samples turned out. I made a mallet out of a super ball and a bamboo skewer to hit it better for the sample smile

Oh thank you heart I should lean more into chill vibes like Dr Frog was suggesting...think less and roll with it.

Thank you so much! The bass was when things started to click for me...had way too much fun with the octave jump big_smile Makes me happy you noticed the layering, I'm working on intentionally adding parts to build interest and energy this year heart

What a lovely comparison...I remember those guys, they were the hardest working band in the 90s. I saw them at a bunch of fairs and festivals in my area, too. Thank you heart

Thank you! I like how the handpan sounds a bit more like a steel drum in this song, it got that tropical sunny feel to it smile
