The Fates

By Paisleyfrog on Yesterday 5:36 pm

Let's do something random.

Because of course I have frog dice!

Came down to another Friday night and I didn't have anything started. Wasn't sure what to do, but hit upon a couple ideas - one was going back to my cheap theremin. I got a clue as to why I haven't been able to pipe it into Logic yet, so I can record now (phase cancellation problems).  The other was something I had thought of before, but never tried: making a track with random instrumentation that I get by rolling dice. Played with the theremin, but dice is the winner. (We’ll revisit the theremin later.)

I saw the idea a while ago from a creator that was playing off the whole "Roll For $X" thing, and was doing "Roll for Song". His thing was to roll for instruments for each section - rhythm, percussion, lead, etc, and then roll for a song to do a short cover of. Fun, but not chaotic enough. Nevermind that the whole "cover" part is a no go for WB.

So, on Friday night I listed out instruments - figured a list of 36 would be good for now, so I could roll 2D6 and figure a tens roll and a ones roll (11-16, 21-26, etc). Had to do a bit of figuring on how to list things, lest I end up with a list that is 75% flute/wind instrument. I also worked on how I listed things to give more entries to guitar/bass, and less to flutes and whistles (guitars and basses are listed separately, while Recorders are given "any" (soprano, tenor, etc).

Anyway, my instruments for this week:

22. Soprano ukulele
45. Electric mandolin
21. Synth bass
36. Silver flute
64. Hulusi (Chinese free-reed instrument)
61. Hand percussion

That is a VERY favorable list for a first random try!

Figured out a quick pattern on the uke, and then tried the hulusi. It's a diatonic instrument, and I didn't remember what key it was in. Played a little pattern - holy cow, does that fit with the uke?!? Yup! Go with it. The mail melodic theme that sounds a bit like a clarinet is that initial idea. Finished the whole thing in three hours or so.

If you're curious,

› here's the list, and more thoughts.

On to week 24! I continue to be amazed at what everyone is posting, y'all are crushing it smile

Headbanging to this Lilo and Stitch type beat so hard

Just delightful. This could equally score a continuous beach sunset video loop or something by Tarantino or Guy Ritchie. heart

Your randomize method sounds so fun, and will probably use for inspiration in a future week if you don't mind!  Melody wise it reminds me a bit of ABBA's honey honey and the comp reminds me a bit of the cure (but all distinctly different - just makes me think of those). Chill and pleasant throughout and agree with neon that it's perfect sunset music. The percussion is great and tasteful too!

What a cozy, fantastic track. I love it. It's very warm. Feels like a hug, Lilo and Stitch is a good comparison tbh. Very wholesome heart

I need a fancy drink with an umbrella followed by a much bigger umbrella.  That's where this happy theme sent me heart oooh love the flute theme that comes in at the end too.  Well done!

I love this comment. heart In a world with far too many genre names, I dub this style as "StitchCore".

Oh thank you. Now I'm imagining this playing over some violent action scene where this is the only audio. smile

Thank you so much! I love getting musical comparisons, my brain totally works that way. And those are awesome artists to be reminded of! heart I LOVE how everyone is getting sunset/beach imagery - I didn't have a "feel" in mind when I was making the track, and am very happy that it came together that way smile

And definitely, use the random method! So much fun, and I'm looking forward to using it again. I don't think I've ever used just hand percussion on a track quite like this, glad it worked smile Putting a gentle restriction around myself is a good way to force myself out of comfort areas.

Additionally, the Blank Page can be the hardest thing to get past when making a Beat - forcing myself into a subset of possibilities works so well to kickstart an idea. I just need to remember that it's a tool - and to Follow the Creativity if I feel confined by it!

This is such a lovely comment, thank you. Never thought I'd be writing music in '26 that would be described as wholesome and cozy, and I'm here for it smile

Thank you!! Gonna say it again - I LOVE LOVE LOVE how everyone is getting beach vibes from this. heart

Funny thing about that ending flute theme. I added that when I was almost done, it's the earlier flute solo with a chop and loop on it. It was a happy discovery when I found the earlier flute part fit under the end fade - I really liked the tone on that recording! smile

This is a jam! love the chilled vibes - sometimes having extra limitations or decisions made for us - in your case your list - can break out of habits! love this. truly beautiful!
