Stop Saying You're Sorry

Gothic metal ballad finally happened! Enough time, enough energy, wife is healthy.  And there was much rejoicing. smile

This is another one that has been in the archive for a while. My wife wrote this for a dear friend anbout eight years ago and got the idea to do it as a gothic metal ballad when I was working on Vicious Circle. (These were actually the first words we tried putting to that one, but it just didn't fit.)

This has had a melody for a while as well, but not necessarily for gothic metal. It was also in a major key. We largely used what we had before for the verse, but the chorus is new. Guitars are tuned in open D5 because why not.

Strings are a mix of EWQLSO and Hollywood Strings Opus (still getting used to that orchestral suite). Made heavy use of the broken chord session player for the piano, and filled it out with a session pad. Having the chords baked into the project made it handy when I wanted to redo the bass with the jazz bass, as all the chords were listed for me right there. Needed the road map, I don't use C minor very often.

I've had the framework in place for a couple of weeks now. I wanted to finish orchestrating this one after vocals were in place, and I'm glad I did - the mix fought me like hell. I’m really happy with how this turned out, but getting it to translate between speakers was NOT working, and making everything work with the dynamic range in this song was…a struggle smile All worth it. We’re both pretty happy that this song finally became reality.

This is a great song! I gotta say these vocals are stunning though. Really well done both of you!

what a voice! great lyrics. solo sends the whole thing into orbit. bravo, maestro!!

You are always soooo on point with genre it's just masterful. The vocals, the piano, the strings, all perfect. Absolutely love the guitar solo around 2:45ish - I sorta want more more more. Actually I definitely want more guitar - you've got a great clean tone for the genre, even on the thrashing parts, why not bring that forward a bit? It sounds fantastic.

Great song smile

The vocals, the production -- it's all top-notch. The mix sounds great to me. Really a great job all around!

Awesome! So cool to hear this come together. Those string stabs and that guitar tone are superb, and…well, let’s just say it’s a message I really needed to hear right now. Thanks so much to both of you for sharing this, I love it!

THIS IS SO BADASS!!!! ABSOLUTELY up my alley, hahahaha... Like I said before, I was super into goth rock with stuff like Nightwish and Within Temptation. This hits that spot perfectly. The vocals here are amazing.
And I agree with zone limits - everything works cohesively super well, but that guitar solo just really ties up the whole thing so damn nicely. Super duper well done!

This is so excellent. Nails the genre perfectly. Really great lyrics. I can't write lyrics worth a damn so I'm always amazed at seeing artists here crush it out in a week. Inspirational stuff really.

y'all killed it! vocals and melody so strong and that solo rips.  \m/

Thank you! I passed that along to her. She was a little frustrated while recording because she wishes she had a more powerful voice....but I think the results here are pretty spot on heart

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the solo, it took an evening to figure out what i wanted to do. I am not a fast or fancy player smile

Thanks! And yeah, I agree...this one doesn't hit quite as hard...it's one of the things I was fighting with. I think the guitar in this song is a victim of the mixing issues I was having. Bring the guitar up? Vocals are buried. Rein them in? Now they're way too muted. Overall I'm happy with it smile

Thank you! I was doing final tweaks on Sunday when I finally got to where I was happy with the mix. Way more work than usual!

Thank you! I love Within Temptation as well, they're a huge influence here smile

Thanks! My wife is a great lyricist with a deft touch. I tend to be a bit more....blunt. The joke is we're like two birds with our approaches, a hummingbird and a woodpecker. Hummingbird: "I shall sip nectar in a delicate ballet". Woodpecker: "IMMA STAB THIS TREE WITH MY FACE KNIFE."

When I write lyrics and am stuck, she says, "Go face knife some lyrics!" LOL

SOOO GOOOOOOD! Rich and epic, and your wife's vocal soar over everything (as they should). The whole track is a ride of different moods - I can see how it was a challenge to get everything to behave together, but to me it sounds like you crushed it. That guitar is amazing, and whenever you incorporate strings it's an absolute treat.

Well god damn, this was worth the wait.  As always your wife's voice is beautiful and fits this musical style so very well.  2 stand outs:
1 - the strings (I think strings) at the end of each chorus was excellent
2 - a mother fucking metal ballad guitar solo.  perfect!

Awesome heavy orchestration throughout! \m/ hell yais! love those orchestral DjentDjentDjent riffs.  Gave me feels of Evanescence meets Roxette's Listen to your heart with the vocal melody.  Also the hummingbird/woodpecker reference is great! future song/album name smile Great job!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I think it was the changes in feel that fought me so much. Tried compressing the vocals to more to fit, and suddenly the breath noises are EVERYWHERE LOL. Glad it worked out well in the end!

Thank you!! It felt good to finally get this one done. (I have to keep reminding here that her voice is amazing.)

Yup, those are the Hollywood Strings - they sound amazing, but I'm still getting used to how to incorporate them.

My solo playing is neither fast nor fancy...so it was pretty cool to solo on a song that wanted slow and melodic heart

You, my good sir, have an incredible ear. I had both of those in my head while I was writing this (along with a healthy dollop of Within Temptation). And I may have to keep "The Hummingbird and the Woodpecker" in my back pocket as an album name big_smile Thank you so much!!

Awesome! Sounds great, everything works so well together! Love a gothic ballad guitar solo too! Love the orchestration of the whole thing, well done all!

Beautiful! The words really fit as a Gothic metal ballad. Important message. I love the stripped down and vulnerable ending, it really brings it all together.
