It's Alright

A bit of a placeholder track for this week - there was a gothic metal ballad planned, but my wife got hit with a summer cold. The lyrics are important to her and we didn't want to half-ass it - so, next week!

I made some Hit 'Em (which I will not inflict upon you). So, I took a 90 degree turn off of last week with the guitar harmony work. I've also been listening to a bunch of Lou Reed lately, so it put me towards straight ahead rock. After I started it, I had to check to make sure I wasn't ripping off the Sweet Jane riff. Not totally at least. (This is very much NOT a Lou Reed track in that it has a bridge.) Track came together Saturday night and I did vocals and lyrics Sunday.

Session players are nice for getting a song put together quickly and giving a bit of texture. Using both organ and analog pad players, plus drums. Bass is me. I was having a bit of fun layering the harmonies at the end - overall, there are seven guitar tracks.

Listening to Lou Reed also got me thinking about the sort of spoken style he had. Also a bit of Rick Ocasek in here. The title and lyrics are based off of a phrase Lou frequently used - it's alright (And perhaps more than a little of Rock & Roll by VU.)  Perhaps a bit cheesy this week, but it was nice to be cheery and happy after last week's Doom. smile

Placeholder track? Ha.
When I read that I wasn't expecting much and then pressed play and this kicks in!
Honestly that chorus lead guitar (synth? keytar?) riff is awesome! (How did you get that lead guitar sound?) At the bridge too. AND those layered at the end when it ramps up for the last chorus. Think it ends really strong. Honestly this is pretty damn awesome, I'm jamming to this!

I picked up some Bowie vibes. I hear the Lou Reed for sure, cool influence smile Really fun.

Big tune!

Thank you heart

Calling this a placeholder is probably me overthinking a song that came together quickly. Thanks for pointing that out - WB teaches me to get out of my own head. smile

Chorus tones are all layered guitar (Epi SG into a Mesa/Boogie model that I’ve compressed the hell out of). I’ve used the Maelstrom Logic preset as my starting point for a LOT of my guitar tones this year.

You’re totally right, Bowie is in there too. A lot of my favorite vocalists are not good singers in the traditional sense smile

Oh cool, they have the maelstrom preset on garageband too so may give that a go smile But was this recorded on Logic cab sim, or mic'd up then? Don't feel the need to answer all my questions haha

Logic cab sim! I'm all in-box for my guitar sounds. I'm guessing that the basic preset on GB will be the same, it shares the same sound engine with Logic.

I was grooving along to the intro and when your vocals hit I knew it was you. I don't know if I'm getting used to your vocals or if you're just that good. This is a great track that sounds effortless. It's something I'd expect to hear on 90s alt rock stations. Production is fantastic - it sounds rich right from the beginning and your vocals sit nicely. The vocals are forward but not jarringly so, kinda like how Jeff Lynne does (and why Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever sounds so gooooood).

Definitely got the Lou Reed vibe with the spoken vocals and alt rock style with a bit of grunge distortion on the guitars. Agree this is NOT a placeholder track, but a solid, well-produced mix that shows what you can do with your talent in a pinch. Hope your wife feels better and look forward to the gothic metal tune you have on-deck.

Those guitar harmonies are just excellent and the production is phenomenal. This is no placeholder, it's great stuff.
Awesome job. Excited for next weeks track!

Thank you heart I've been working on leaning into some of the vocal feedback I've gotten. I don't know if I personally will be able to call my vocals good, but I think I'm developing a style. But I'm gaining confidence - I don't think I've EVER had my vocals as far forward as I do in this mix. I was modeling after the mix on Lou's New York album, so solid and warm. (I played around with the new ChromaGlow plug in Logic, and I'm REALLY happy with the results. Vocals were recorded with a basic SM58, I've never gotten texture like this before.)

Also, Jeff Lynne is a goddamn studio WIZARD.

Thank you so much. There's some "this got done quickly, so it can't be that good" in my head that I'm trying to excise. Time spent isn't a requirement for something to be good...I mean, the lovely pieces you've come up with on Sunday afternoons are proof positive of that! (She's finally feeling a bit better! She's hoping to be able to sing by the end of the week.)

Thank you! Harmonies are so much fun to play. I may need to come back this way again after next week smile

I knew right away it was going to be way more than just alright.

Another great song, and to join in everyone's sentiment above, this is one hell of a track to call a placeholder...and yeah, quite velvety.  Apologies if I am using the wrong terminology, but I love the guitar lead at the 3 minute mark.  I hope that summer cold is gone soon, cause a goth metal ballad has me very intrigued.

dang! solid songwriting! catchy hook with the it's alright and guitar melody. nice work on the vocals, sounds natural and laid back. gotta check out lou reed sometime!

Thank you! The lead at 3:00 was a melodic idea I had when this was trying to be an instrumental - it layered rather nicely over the end smile

I'm excited to finish the ballad - framework is done, but I wanted to arrange it the rest of the way with voice in place and not the scratch piano melody.

Thank you! Lou Reed is a huge influence on me...and on rock in general. The first Velvet Underground album sort of established the modern alt rock sound in 1967. He's a little erratic as a solo artist - but New York is a masterpiece. It's stripped-down rock & roll storytelling - life in New York City in 1988, with all the grit and despair that went along with it. In the liner notes, Lou says you should listen to it in one sitting, like a movie or novel. I always do heart

yeah, this is a great vibe for you. your vocals sound great, and i like the mix quite a bit!
i think the guitar is also pulling in some Bowie vibes, almost Fripp-like.
would not be mad at more Paisleyfrog tracks in this vein!
and yes, hope yr partner is feeling better and up for singing soon. best to both of you

To quote VU, "It was alright!" Actually it's an awesome track and now I'm hugely in the mood to listen to Lou and VU. But this is very much its own thing and not a rip-off. The guitars almost remind me of Eno/Fripp collaborations as well. Great stuff!

Wow, thank you! It clicked on my way home from work what Bowie/Fripp line you're talking about....the main theme in Heroes! That sort of singing guitar tone....I love that. Tony Visconti did a GREAT video where he talks about the making of Heroes...and how Fripp did that with controlled feedback - he had tape marks on the floor by the speaker and would step to a certain mark depending on the pitch he wanted. Legends...heroes. I'm happy to have gotten a tenth of the way there with compression and overdrive heart

I'm thinking that there's definitely gonna be some more feel-good rock like this in my future. I was realizing...holy cow, it's rock in a MAJOR KEY. So fun.

EVERYTHING was alright! I think I'm beginning to see the light. smile

Thank you so much. It's always a worry when doing something so inspired by a musician that it's just a copy. Very glad it's its own thing. Lou Reed is sorta important to me...I used VU lyrics in my wedding this June heart

Wait, "placeholder track"?!?! WHAT?! Get outta here!!!
This rocks. I love how the warm guitar actually conveys the feeling of "it's alright" even without the lyrics - that's SUPER difficult to do!

Also, sorry to hear about your wife catching a bug in the wild. Wishing her a swift recovery!

Thank you so much heart Yeah, I have been throughly chastised for the "placeholder" comment. I have been forcibly shown that just because a track came together quickly doesn't mean it can't be Quality. I won't let it happen again smile

Love this track. Love the refrain, love the guitar after it's alright and I'm gonna spare the rambling cuz the best part for me - the part that screams nostalgia and summer with the top down and that little bit of edgy vibe - is that same refrain repeating and FADING OUT OH MY GOD what a perfect decision. There's your nostalgia right there. Brilliant.

So happy you liked the fade - when I was planning this song, one of the FIRST choices was that it was going to be a simple repeated chorus, and then repeated on the fade. That’s how Lou did it on Sweet Jane…because that’s fuckin’ rock and roll, man. \m/

Neat my friend told me "we gonna be aight" today and then bam this song confirms it smile  Love the full band sound on this.  Organs sound awesome in the mix and especially enjoyed the 7guitar_army_of_sound.  Such a catchy guitar solo towards the end with the drums.  Also that bassline as it twirls around the guitars \m/

Wow this is really great! The guitar hooks are really catchy and I think the vocals sound great! This is a really solid rock song! I enjoyed this all the way through.

Ooohhh love me some joyful rock! Guitar layering sounds awesome and all the session parts are really well chosen/implemented.

We could all use a little more hope these days. heart Great work, and hope you feel better soon. Can’t wait to hear that gothic metal ballad!

“Army of sound” - I love that, thank you smile much better than “wall of sound”. We’re on the attack here! I laid down that hammer on bass part first and let things fall around it. I’m primarily a bassist after all smile

Thank you! Still really insecure about vocals, but I think I’m finding a sound - glad they worked smile

Thanks! The session players are interesting, it’s like massaging something until you get a good result. I’m having fun experimenting with them. More experiments with them in week 34 with some more good time rock!

You’re absolutely right. I’m an optimistic person to my core, but hope has been in limited supply. I’m starting to feel hopeful again…. this song is maybe a reflection of that. Thank you.

Goth metal ballad is gonna be one more week, my wife wasn’t up to it. One more week of some good-time rock (even if the lyrics aren’t as good time this time around LOL)

This is great! Definitely not a placeholder! Nice old school sound to it! Impressed!

now i see why you are paisley smile  i can see a paisley pattern guitar in my mind
