Fixed (look at me)

By Paisleyfrog on July 14, 2024 9:43 pm

This song came about from a six step mental jump.

I started out that whole Texas blues thing a few weeks ago because I tried to rewire an old guitar (and failed). Well, I was looking at r/luthier this week and found a simple solution...which fixed it! (Jack was wired backwards). Which made me think of the old NIN Fixed ep. Which made me think, I haven't listened to Broken in a long time. Which made me remember how much I loved the ton of bricks guitar sound in Wish. Which made me think I need to do as noisy song this week! Title comes from the ep as well as my guitar.

Took a few tries to get things going and not sound like warmed-over NIN. Almost gave up (HAH!) a few times and went in another direction (jangle rock, another blues) before I made this. Another fun fact - the drum beat in Wish is a C&W drum beat commonly called a train beat.

One last little bit of Keweenaw music in here - the white noise burst sound is a sample of a waterfall that I recorded when we were up there.

Samples are from The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) - public domain.

This piece gives me an urge to put on a suit with a loose tie and sunglasses, and walk dow the street in slow motion during a sunset. Haha. Badass.

Soooo good.  You really nailed this and impressively you invoked like 3 stages of NIN's sound (Broken - Fragile) and yet it doesn't sound derivative of Trent's sound at all.  The slight rise in aggression towards the end was really nice.  Excellent sample choices (the Shrinking Man samples now sound like the villain from The Cell) and love what you did with the waterfall.  Seriously well done.

"Almost gave up (HAH!)" ... not going to lie, I laughed.

Audibly freaking out my dogs by exclaiming "oh my god yes" while listening to the opening of this. Absolutely flashing me back to some of my fave NIN, and maybe a whee bit of Skinny Puppy? The pounding builds towards the end are so freaking epic. And the glitch and vocal disruption. Absolutely loved this.

If you time it right, you could probably have an explosion behind you too. big_smile Thanks!

Thank you so much! I was really uncertain about the samples at first, but they grew on me. smile I can't tell you how much time I've spent listening to Broken and The Downward Spiral, I've always loved the texture and sound design. Haven't put as much time into The Fragile, I'll have to go check that out.

Glad the joke didn't Suck.

....I'll see myself out...

Thank you!! Skinny Puppy is my touchstone for noisy music, been a fan for 30 years heart The half-baked efforts were when I was trying to approach it like NIN music. It clicked in my head when I went at it how I do noisy music - which is through the lens of SP. Makes me happy that you heard it.

great stuff man! Excellent choice and use of those samples

oh wow, love everything about this. really great work here!
that waterfall burst is perfect  big_smile
the distorted guitar is so big and fuzzy, but doesn't overwhelm the mix. so good

I reeeeeally love your industrial tunes. This one starts quietly (love that guitar) and gets relentless pretty quickly before BOOM. When it all hits at 2:31 (after a nicely placed LOOK AT ME) it's a slice of heaven. Everything works so well together in this track. I want your industrial album to come out soon pls.

Thanks! I first saw it when I was like five…it made an impression on me. Excited to find it was public domain!

Thanks! I used two different amp models and a fair amount of overdubs…glad they weren’t out of control!

You make me blush, man…thank you. I really enjoyed getting back into noise this week, it’s going to continue. I’m also thinking I may have an album by the end of the year. Looking forward to revisiting some of the earlier tracks and applying the things I’ve been learning.

Absolutely love your use of the samples in this one, which sound very tragic and meaningful.
Just looked up the movie, I was expecting something outdated and silly but it actually seems like it might be tragic and meaningful.

This is intense! I also like the overall structure and dynamics of this track as a whole. Cool synth work there in the first half…

Thank you! It's a classic of 50s sci-fi that has held up really well..a tragedy under guise of an adventure story. Wonderful special effects, clever storytelling, and some heavy emotions that are played well. I first saw it when I was maybe five...it made an impression.

Thank you! Once I found that arp sound in the beginning, the rest sort of fell into place. smile
