Barbara

More spooky season music, and bringing the noise. lament.config had used samples from Night of the living Dead a few weeks ago, and it was really inspiring. I had used these particular NotLD samples eight or so years ago and decided to revisit them - also, "They're coming to get you, Barbara" is iconic. Childish and creepy. Also one of the best opening sequences in a horror movie ever.

Tried a few new techniques in this one - first, was actually putting my samples into a sampler and playing them, rather than clipping and dragging regions. I love the kind of sample chopping that MRDRCAT does, and wanted to try it out. I didn't do it a ton, but it was fun to try. I often let dialog just play, but I wanted to isolate some samples this time.

Also tried out the tempo track to add space at points in the song. I've done that before by physically dragging my regions, but that messes up the session drummer. So, I just dropped the tempo to extend it out a bit. Worked well, but there were spots where you can hear some glitching from the tempo change on echo and delay. Considering how noisy the track is anyway, it's not really an issue. Also added a slowdown to the end like the band was ending.

Also played around with some glitch effects - really liked the added texture and randomness it gives. It's most evident in the percussion, but I also added it to a layer of guitar to add some noise.

The bridge is mainly three layers of the “groundskeeper eats Johnny” sequence. I like how it sounds like Johnny is drunkenly telling a story while Barbara is in mortal peril.

The guitars are maybe a little close to week 28. But I guess if I'm gonna plagiarize anyone, it should be myself.

Well god damn if this isn't a masterclass in using film vocal samples, amazing.  This is such a fun track and, not going to lie, those glitches are sexy AF.  Knowing the film so well this track hits on a few levels, it's almost like you're remixing that scene through this song.  As much as Johnny sounds like he's goofing around you made Barbara sound even more terrified somehow.  Fantastic work

Yeah this is really cool. Was not expecting the guitars AT ALL, and I love a good nod to George Romero. Great use of samples!

wowowow!! love the way you used the samples, but...
THOSE GUITARS holy carps
and yeah, that bridge made me feel woozy
nice work, Paisley!

This is such a huge compliment from you, thank you. The first time I used these samples, I pretty much let the scene run and added the music over it. Clipping the samples is like trimming it down to its essence - you're right, it's like remixing the scene. So much fun.

Slowing down the bridge made Johnny sound drunk, but I also slowed down the caretaker attack - I think it made Barbara's screams more intense.

Also, I finally got illformed Glitch2. It's very much a potent seasoning that I'll have to make sure not to overuse, but goddamn it's fun.

Thank you! I was intending the guitars to act as a jump scare - it's why I wanted to take them out of the beat slightly, so they were even less expected. Glad they worked smile

Thank you!! It's my cheap tele clone, doubled and panned hard left and right with my "grind" patch. I was sorta amazed at how massive it sounded. I added the whammy to my rebuilt strat and throttled the noisy solo out of it at the end.

I've added a lot of gear to my rebuilt studio over the past year, but one of my favorite picks is that cheap telecaster from Wish. I finally understand all the Telecaster love...and it's not even a "real" one smile

Love how you sync the sample with the beat around 45, such a cool effect. WHOA that guitar section, so unexpected. Glitch parts are great! Great composition on this one, the variations and nuances make for an exciting listen. Killer!!

Man, I'm just glad my name isn't Barbara. That shit is creepy. I like that it brings the musical character out of a sentence spoken normally. Well, creepily, but in a natural cadence. haha. Good job.

I've never really done rhythmic playing of my samples, it's a lot of fun. The new Sampler in Logic makes it crazy easy, I may have to do it some more smile Thank you!

Thanks! I did a tap tempo get the feel for what the project should be (Johnny delivers that line at 86bpm). Also, fun fact: my mom's name was Barbara, so there's an interesting feel with that.

I love the beat, I love the tempo sync'd samples, I love the hypnotic spooky creep factor of the "Barbara" over and over but I think one of the most brilliant parts of this song are those initial moments when the guitar comes in LOUD and STARTLING and SCARY, only to drop back to near-silence and into the groove with the samples a moment later. It really primes us to want and expect the fantastic thrashing ending where it all crashes together. Just awesome!
