A Self-Made Lucifer

By Paisleyfrog on November 17, 2024 4:18 pm

Making this one felt good.

The basis of this one is my fifth try at an angry song from last week. The song started with the bassline, my waterfall noise instrument, and two Drummers. Started with an acoustic kit, and put a glitch filter on it. I then copied that same pattern to a 909 type kit. Gives a good thump with a lot of bonus random noise, but stays rhythmic. It really clicked this week when I put guitars on, and it started to go full NIN - so yeah, I embraced that. Built the track into something listenable LEGO-style by clipping and repeating sections and tracks as necessary.

I had no idea what the song was going to be about, though. At the end of October, I was playing with a lot of samples I had found and used in other songs back in 2013 (see also: Barbara) ...but couldn't get past the context in which I had originally used these. I thought that they might be fun to use in this track so I threw one on - and that sample of Peter Lorre jumped up and said "I'M YOUR BOI". Title figured and lyric direction determined. Lyrics wrote themselves pretty quickly after that. Didn't have to think too hard to come up with lines about self-made Lucifers....

I haven’t done a deeply textured song in a few weeks - two tracks last week, some 30+ tracks this week. It was fun putting on and peeling off layers to make things have the best impact. Tried some different stuff - verse 2 uses a tuba smile

Samples are public domain from an episode of "Checkmate", 1961.

Fucking nailed it.  Guitar tone was on point, vocal rhythms sound like they could have been pulled out of Broken and textually on the edge of chaos.  Very, very nice work.

this is really awesome, yes this could have been on Broken for SURE

random thoughts: - compress the vocals a little more, increase the volume a SMIDGE, cut out a little low-mid.  for the chorus add a little super short, not very noticeable delay for the shout vocal and/or double it up with more vocal tracks!  that's what I would do smile

well the TOPIC was certainly relateable!

most excellent job SEÑOR FROG!!!!!

This is so badass, hot damn.... Knocked the "angry song" assignment clean out of the park, srsly!
Also quite... Timely... Hahahahaha... "Self made lucifer" is such a great friggin line. Awesome work!

Truly the antithesis of Marylin Manson. Who needs a personal Jesus when you're a self-made Lucifer.
Amazing production!

I do often a appreciate a good angry song!

big YES to the double drummers. I do love to do that, Osees really sold me on it.
I really got the NIN vibe at the bridge. Honestly, pretty badass.
Cool vocal treatment - what's you got the vocals running through?

Cool stuff, nice job!

This is my favorite of yours so far. Really impressed. Definitely NIN and Korn vibe, fucking awesome. The blend of the electronic feel with rock was done really really well. Excellent job, my friend!

WOW. Anger level 11 - you Nine Inch NAILED this one! And yet - I happened to pop back into my office halfway through and as soon as I heard the Reznor-style vocals I was like "Oh! I'm missing Paisleyfrog's WB!!" and had to start it over. So you got his AND your styles wrapped up with a bow. The guitars & percussion are perfect. Those lyrics...man I hope he feels them every time someone listens to this

Thank you! "On the edge of chaos" - I like that!

Gracias! big_smile big_smile

Yeah, vocals fought me a little on this one, trying to get levels consistent and with good tone - my compression is almost slammed, and EQ looks like a roller coaster LOL I tried doubling the chorus and it ended up just sounding messy. The slapback echo is a great idea for thickness....I'll give that a try!

Thanks! So many good samples and lines in that show - all of the clips I grabbed are in like a three minute scene.

Thanks! Also, I'll have to check out Osees...

Vocal chain is really simple - EQ, compression, and ChromaGlow for texture. Just started digging into that from the last Logic update, it's got some depth. I added some chorus at the chorus (which seems appropriate) to give it some spread, because trying to sing a double line was NOT working.

Wow, thanks! smile I love the blend of acoustic drums with electronic - Skinny Puppy would always have a live drummer with them on tour, it adds so much depth to the music.

Go sit in the corner for that one.

No, kidding, that was awesome LOL

Glad it didn't come across as too much shameless copying, I can totally hear which NIN songs I scammed from to make this smile Thank you!

Wow the vocals do not sound slammed at all so nice job on the compressor!

BRUH

smile smile smile

Yay, LEGOs! big_smile

This song kicks butt. And I think I know whose butt and you know what, I’m cool with that.

Adding my own BRUH. Holy crap. Holy carps as Josh would say.

Literally spent the last three weeks listening to this NIN era and like ... studying how Reznor sings ... and HOLY BRUH CARPS BRUH this is so well executed. That drop around 3 mins gave me the effing chills bruh. THE CHILLS.

Okay I'm done this just got me way excited. Also I'm a sucker for the name Lucifer. Also it is SHOCKINGLY DIFFICULT to repeat a lyric over and over like that and keep it interesting and this goes way past interesting into a total head-smashing jam.

This was awesome. I am in awe. And inspired.

Carps, bruh. CARPS.

Sort of like Death on Two Legs by Queen, this song is full of hyperbole, and leaves the identity of the villain as an exercise for the listener.

But I think you can be pretty confident of who I was thinking of when I wrote it, yeah. smile

I love thinking of songs like this in a modular fashion, copy/paste and turn it into something that resembles a song - it helps get me past the "that's a cool loop, now what?" problem, because I'll get ideas of where it should go much easier.

(Also, I JUST got back into LEGOS after decades of not. The Atari 2600 set scratched an itch I didn't know I had.)

Having you excited and inspired is such a compliment - especially considering how much I admire your music. Thank you so much. This year has done amazing things for my confidence as a musician. smile

Great work!

Heh, thanks! I went back and checked what my compression curve looked like....it's damn near a horizontal line LOL

okay crazy, don't even listen to me then, i have no idea what i'm talking about, lol!!!!

I forgot to say: I particularly enjoy "CARPS" as a compliment...because Magikarp is my favorite Pokemon. He's a symbol of how if you grind long enough and hard enough, you'll become awesome smile

LOL smile  As if, I'm still going to try the slapback echo trick you suggested big_smile wink

It might not sound as slammed as you'd expect because of the mic and placement I was using - finally got a new condenser, and I was about a foot back. I was making the compressor work for it smile

hell yeah, PF!!

Hahaha hell yes. Let's fucking go. Getting those NINisms spot on. Holy moly.

Thanks! It was fun to sing this one, to think about where Reznor sends his melodies, and the different energy he puts in different lines. Was definitely pulling from all the times I've listened to Broken smile
