PHEW
So this is my last "new" song for 2021. This basically has all my emotions about the entire year, and a lot of the musical and technical lessons I've learned are in here too. Thinking back to my first Model:Cycles song, I can't believe how far I've come in one year. This was the song I was working on back in October, week 40, when my guitar broke. I fixed the guitar but didn't have time to finish the song so I quickly wrote something else.
All the electronics are from the Model:Cycles and all the guitar is from the Jazzmaster. A few EQ, filter, and reverb touches from Ableton. I accidentally programmed a random length for the first hi-hat and it is SO awesome to me. Sometimes you get a nice sizzle, sometimes you get a little clipping pop sound. The main Cycles sound is courtesy of a FREE preset kit courtesy of WavParty.com.
It was really tough to come back to the song and try to write a second section that was as good as the first. I hate that whole "painting yourself into a corner" thing, but I must say I feel like I did a really good job. I think the main thing is that you have to first believe that you can do it, as opposed to, "I'll never write anything as good as that." The second thing is to just set aside the time. "I'm going to sit here for an hour and attempt to write B sections and we'll see how it goes." The week I wrote the B section, I knew I didn't have enough time to finish the song, so I was just screwing around and having fun. Since the pandemic started, most all of the music time has been work for WB, as opposed to "fun". I think this song could have been mastered louder, but I am still really learning how to use Ozone 9. I hope the mix is okay, still learning the new speakers. I actually tested the kick drum in the car, something else I used to do with mixes, and I made a critical adjustment that I think makes it sound great.
I think the coldness of the FM synth is a TERRIFIC compliment for my warm surf rock guitar sound. I just feel like this is some quintessential Orange Drink. Next two songs are going to be songs that I've been scared to record since 2005 *yikes* so STAY TUNED.
Goals for the end of the year:
- [DONE!] Record the Model:Cycles + Guitar song I started in October
- Record two long unrecorded Orange Drink songs (from 2005!)
- Respond to all comments
- Listen to and comment on a reasonable amount of tracks by the "WB Ultra Homies"
- Secret Surprise
