Sunlight On The Horizon

last minute upload, you know how it is

mad PHEW mad

So this is my last "new" song for 2021.  This basically has all my emotions about the entire year, and a lot of the musical and technical lessons I've learned are in here too.  Thinking back to my first Model:Cycles song, I can't believe how far I've come in one year.  This was the song I was working on back in October, week 40, when my guitar broke.  I fixed the guitar but didn't have time to finish the song so I quickly wrote something else.

All the electronics are from the Model:Cycles and all the guitar is from the Jazzmaster.  A few EQ, filter, and reverb touches from Ableton.  I accidentally programmed a random length for the first hi-hat and it is SO awesome to me.  Sometimes you get a nice sizzle, sometimes you get a little clipping pop sound.  The main Cycles sound is courtesy of a FREE preset kit courtesy of WavParty.com

It was really tough to come back to the song and try to write a second section that was as good as the first.  I hate that whole "painting yourself into a corner" thing, but I must say I feel like I did a really good job.  I think the main thing is that you have to first believe that you can do it, as opposed to, "I'll never write anything as good as that."  The second thing is to just set aside the time.  "I'm going to sit here for an hour and attempt to write B sections and we'll see how it goes."  The week I wrote the B section, I knew I didn't have enough time to finish the song, so I was just screwing around and having fun.  Since the pandemic started, most all of the music time has been work for WB, as opposed to "fun".  I think this song could have been mastered louder, but I am still really learning how to use Ozone 9.  I hope the mix is okay, still learning the new speakers.  I actually tested the kick drum in the car, something else I used to do with mixes, and I made a critical adjustment that I think makes it sound great.

I think the coldness of the FM synth is a TERRIFIC compliment for my warm surf rock guitar sound.  I just feel like this is some quintessential Orange Drink.  Next two songs are going to be songs that I've been scared to record since 2005 *yikes* so STAY TUNED. yikes

Goals for the end of the year:

- [DONE!] Record the Model:Cycles + Guitar song I started in October
- Record two long unrecorded Orange Drink songs (from 2005!)
- Respond to all comments
- Listen to and comment on a reasonable amount of tracks by the "WB Ultra Homies"
- Secret Surprise lol

That Model:Cycles is sounding good! And the ending section of this is very nice smile

Killer beat and the synths have a fantastic tone to them.

Oh you got a great kick sound - the car test did not deceive you. You are right, the synth and the jazzmaster work very well. Special love to the section from 4:10 - tasty guitar licks there! As I am listening to this track I am not sure how i'd classify it and I think that's great in itself! I appreciated that track.
Why do you say it's your last new song of the year?

Stunning. Beautiful work on this one. big_smile

very orange drinky. good in every way. the climax of 2020!!!

This is so dope, your use of the model:cycles over the year has been a great progression, I always enjoy the sounds and grooves you get out of it, the FM synth fits in so well with the mix, love the end when everything comes together and you can't do nothing but smile.  I hate mixing, it's confusing and your ears get fatigued, but agree, if it sounds good in the car, it always sounds good everywhere else.

Some tasty Orange Drinkiness! It feels like sunlight on the horizon for sure.
Kudos on finising. Came out great. This flows along wonderfully. Love that kick and all the cycles sounds. That little synth just cuts through! Agree, nice contrast with guitar, which sound great here. I was kinda hoping for some OD vocals up on here too. Thanks for sharing the wavparty link, I gotta go check that. Looking forward to next two songs!

The mix is good and the composition feels real nice. The guitars are smooth and the synths sweet. Maybe the hats can be dialed back a bit, but they bring the fizz strong.

Awwwww yais I'm feeling that trademark Orangedrink sound in this.  From the synths to the overall chord progression.  Especially when the guitar kicks in.  The drums have an excellent PUNCH to them in the mix.  Love that added rhythm synth after the drop at 3:44.  Oooh a bit of Cure-like guitars to?  High Five!  This def is a perfect track to sum up the year.  Excellent harmonies as well.  Also wavparty is awesome for some inspiration but also very distracting when it comes to me having FOMO_free_downloads smile    Also, be nice to your KRKs!

I have used a sample from this track under the Creative Commons license for my upcoming track this week (i.e. week 51) entitled v50sverm. I think the link will be generated as https://weeklybeats.com/trumbuthegn/music/v50sverm and if that turn out not to be the case, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the inspiration! ヽ(⌐■_■)ノ♪♬

Really big sounds and variations throughout the track. Loving all the drum and synth sounds.  Cold but warm at the same time with the combo of chord progressions ad guitar. I like your use of lower range (baritone range) chords in this and other tracks.  Adds warmth and heft. Only two more weeks!  Looking forward to hearing your plan unfold.  Please hit me up off WB if you'd like to submit a scifi inspired track for BSFFF 2021 smile

great vibe to this one

I really dig the use of space in the beat, I've always liked when you can feel the absence of the beat and still feel the song moving. The bass is really full and warm and definitely adds a lot of the emotion by itself, and the continued stacking of musical motifs between the synths and guitar build a really nice texture for the tune. The ending is particularly nice smile

Thank you so much!

Thanks to WavParty and the Model:Cycles!  I knew I had a great beat, and I'm glad I shelved it to give it the attention it deserved.

Thanks!  The kick was good before but now I'm in love with it.  Glad I'm transcending genre, that's all I want to do!

It's my last "new" song of the year, because the next two songs are songs that I wrote in 2005, but never recorded!

Thank you for using the word 'Stunning' - means a lot

Thank you for being a part of this journey with me!  I really feel like I have a good baseline understanding of the Cycles and can incorporate it into other things (not just a Cycles-only track).  Yeah, car test for the win.  It's like a soundproof listening room with huge sound baffles if you think about it!

You are too kind, thank you.  I'm happy that you hear what I heard in the track.  Very affirming.  I did think about vocals, but I think that's inevitable in the future - guitar + cycles + vocals.  Wavparty rocks, tell them Orange Drink sent you!

Great note, I did want to push the hats because I felt like that randomized first one was a key element, but maybe I could have increased that one's volume on its own.  Very poetic description, my friend - thank you.

Wow, so glad you got all of this out of the track, I'm very proud to get these high marks from you.

I'll contact you once I figure out a good submission - If there is something that you want from my WB content, also let me know!

I'm so happy that you said "cold and warm" at the same time.  Kind of like you are seeing the sunlight, but there's a cold wind blowing, but the sun starts warming everything up. smile

Glad you liked the ending!  That was a big deal for me.  Great words about space - I love it when people do that, but I always get nervous that there's "not enough" - so it feels like a great achievement.  Thank you.

Seriously, you're like the kid that shakes the presents under the Christmas tree and tells everyone what you think it is and then on Christmas day you open the present and start screaming "I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT" and everyone's like shut up just play with your toys GEEZ

TADA!  NO PRESENTS FOR IPAGHOST!

huh, considering how much of a daft punk fan I was at one point, I'm surprised I'd never heard this before!

Lovely cool vibe to this track but I especially enjoy the progression! Super nice track!
