Those clean tones in the intro are so big, I love it. The distorted guitar really adds a jagged edge underneath those clean guitars. I really like the recontextualization of your lyrics from the previous song. The drums coming in during the second half take a sound that already feels massive and just makes it explode! I also like how the vocals sound far away in the distance and are floating over all the chaos below. Really nice! I think you should try that distortion pedal more often!

super pretty. doesn't sound like metal to me at all, sounds like quality shoegaze. I second what Saguaro Gigante said about the distorted and the clean together. it's rich and layered and delicious. I could definitely listen to an album/EP of this kind of stuff.

what you said about repressed anger is pretty interesting. I feel like my anger is way too close to the surface most of the time. and I let loose the distortion with reckless abandon! I don't know which is healthier, honestly. anyway, I am enjoying the tune.

Damn that distortion starting at about 30 secs really gets into my skull!

Super cool when the drums kicks in, it is so fun to go "slow" and hard.

I had to double take the track when the drums kicked in. What is really that heavy before, even with no drums? Yes, it was--and then the drums came in and took it next level. And the video went to night. Great ideas well executed.

Waves of nostalgia here. I don't know what to add that hasn't already been said, other than I'm now on my 5th listen. It's so good.

Blighter's rock definitely has a point about the drums, I didn't pick up on that either so the mix is on point here. It's definitely a very thick, heavy atmosphere that carries itself well. I dig this a lot, I'd say it has some parallels to music like True Widow which is technically a shoe-gaze band but they're also on a record label primary for metal, so this fits in that niche club. Probably best summarized as: DOOM SHOE-GAZE!!! Which is very cool smile

Also, Revelation Nausea is a title that really resonates with me. Perfectly encapsulates what you described feeling. Regarding which, sorry you're feeling angry. I also repress a lot of anger, mostly in regards to shit outside my control, and it really does feel shitty to have it just sitting inside you wanting to be released in the worst of ways if you can't find a good outlet for it. Hope this song provided some catharsis and I'm glad we had some laughs tonight in weeklymeets.

I somehow never noticed or didn't realize there was a lack of distortion pedals in your tracks, but it sounds good.  Other commenters already beat me to the punch, but I was totally thinking this sounds like shoegaze to me.  I wouldn't mind seeing you explore this direction a little more over the course of the year.

song:
wow what a powerful piece... the continuing theme with the lyrics is really intriguing!
the distortion is so pretty/what a great tone - the delay creates a super nausea effect!
the feedback on the delay feels like dissociative floating - your vocals sound so great & sit in the mix nice - the part about 2:07 where the vocals get all wonky was my favorite bit - really cool effect!

stream of conscious thoughts from the video:
revelation nausea = feel this one right in my gut
repressed anger - is depression = unexpressed anger?
(i heard someone say that once & it is something i've been pondering...)
how do we express anger in a healthy way where it doesn't turn in on ourselves or lash out at others?
who is in the drivers seat in our lives?
it was nice to drive around WI with you & Frank even if it was a moody drive
how do we drive you back into the light
wish we could scream sing this with you live - i hope someday we will...

Huge sound, this really brings me back... Jesu have an album called Conquerer from 2007 that you’ve inspired me to listen to again, with a similar kind of funereal doom metal/shoegaze sound, cheers for that. smile Love that huge distorted sound and th mantra-like lyrics. Impressed with the diversity of sounds you’ve covered in WB 22.

To be honest, the sound presents more 90ies grunge as heavy metal to my ears. That is why I feel so connected to this track. It has that kind of anger and powerfuzzaesthetic, the guitars used to have in the 90ies, when I was in my 20th and played guitar in a punkrockband and collected indierecords. The recording and mixing is very good. A band I would like to mention is "smashing orange" referring to your track this week. very good job in expanding your setup to an authentic distortion.

Very nice, like the lyrical sampling from earlier WB, great video too but I'm distracted by how cute Frank is just drivin you around smile

The sound here is really some crazy fuzzy type of sound, chaotic and ready to get out of control at any point. Fuzz factory style but with more bass maybe. I like it, it kinda reminds me of NIN in a way. I like the small break around 3:30 before the drums kick in. And when the drums kick in, they KICK in. You're kicking this bass drum as if it owes you money. You're gonna kick a hole into it!

I enjoyed the drive video last time and I enjoyed it this time as well. Driving is a bit like a time between time, it's a transition between events that are supposed to matter more, and seem to exist in its own spacetime. It has an hypnotic effect, especially if you're a passenger alone behind or if you're driving alone, it takes you deeper and deeper (at least on highways, I find that the constant traffic lights within cities break that spell). I also liked a lot the end of the song, as it gets deeper and deeper. It reminded me of plunging deeper and deeper into the ocean of the subconscious, going in what lies underneath, hidden, but still impacts the upper layers of the ocean. The last lights disappearing on the left are like the daylight disappearing as you dive deeper and deeper.

Haunting track, I feel like it still wants a follow up, maybe even with an ellipsis - what happens when you come back from all this.

Wow this change to night part is amazing, I love your drums big energy. This distortion and the words repeating it becomes almost ambient I think, it's a feeling being lost in thoughts and to understand the words. I wish you have a good week.

Alright, this is my favorite video of yours. 3:52 is my favorite moment -- may seem arbitrary, but I assure you it isn't.

Been a busy week, listened to a lot of this week's at work while working (meaning: distracted listening). This track was kinda a "hell yeah" -- big sound, awesome drums, dreamy awesome vocals -- what's not to "hell yeah?" Now the lines were from my favorite ever Orange Drink song, and that song's a bit of a heavy song, but also one of the best songs ever, and I certainly "hell yeah" that song for a couple of weeks. So I scribbled "<3 drew" without noting the name and figured I'll revisit it later.

Finally caught the video, and felt some aggressive reprogramming of my "hell yeah" attitude from the opening shot/cut alone. Love the idea of using a repressed effect in a song about repressed expression. That may not have registered literally, but certainly registered with that damn sound. Love the dedicated consistency of the video (hence 3:52).

I may have changed how I perceive the song, but in retrospect, my note's 100%.

That guitar so good.

Hi, Drew. Catching up with your wonderful material, finally. I've been maybe more active on your Youtube channel than here, though I want to finally mend that situation.

As many previously commented, the track sounds more grunge/shoegaze to me than metal. Your voice in particular has some kind of Slowdive/mid90s quality to me. Great production, as usual, and I think you keep all of us surprised every week about getting another new idea for a video in a relatively concealed setting.

You've got an email. Hope we could materialize some kind of collab/beat tape, indeed smile

The layers of distortion and feedback have this multiplier effect.  Sounds like a plane taking off! Damn, I love that effect around 3:25 where the trailing vocal winds up into the section with drums.  The video going dark is like going to negative or reversal.  Well done!

Love the dark brooding sound of the guitars.  It reminded me a bit of "The Day The World Went Away" with those extra thick sounding guitars.  The drums sound so powerful and you can feel each snare hit being emotionally hit.  The vocals tie it altogether perfectly.

This is incredible.  Your voice is so good, and sounds perfect in the mix.

Not a big metal fan, but a sucker for distortion, great use of it without fatiguing the listener too much, like how you played off those lyrics from the previous week, great transition from the distortion dropping and coming back in to the night scene

Really digging the dense distortion here. The lyric and melodies are really impactful too.

HEY EVERYONE

I AM CATCHING UP WITH RESPONSES SEVEN MONTHS LATER

LOL

Thanks so much!  This was an exciting new exploration for me and I definitely want to dig into this more and even make an album of this style.

Viridian said “doom shoegaze” and I think that’s great!  That’s cool about our different anger/distortion styles - there’s a time for both, I think!

Thank you, I love that pedal!  Yes, slow/hard seems counter-intuitive but that’s the fun of it.

Thanks!  Glad the mix made you double-take.  It felt scary to mix it that “dense”.  I had no idea how the day/night would end up looking and I was so happy with the results!

Thanks for introducing me to doom shoegaze, that’s totally what this is - I love this new arena for me, ESPECIALLY SINCE I CAN’T PLAY DRUMS THAT FAST :sweat smile emoji:

Glad/sorry the title resonates with you, but glad we’re not alone!  Music is definitely my #1 outlet, but I need to actually DO things that improve my outcomes, not just write songs about how victimized I am.  Months after writing this song, I learned about Radical Responsibility, which has been helping me (when I remember!)  Thanks for your kind words and your compassion!

Your comment of “who is in the drivers seat in our lives” inspired the title for a future song “Your Own Passenger”

Yeah, didn’t we have a convo about depression = repressed anger ???

YES we would be a killer scream sing duo fer realz

Thanks!  Yeah, this might be on a Smashing Pumpkins / Nirvana aesthetic now that I think about it.  Glad you like it smile

Boy I really gotta try this Fuzz Factory one of these days smile

LOL at the kick drum owing me money ROTFL you are too hillarious

Thanks (as always) for your incredibly beautiful words.  You understand my work better than I do so I always learn from you.  It really was amazing how lucky we got with the video.  But maybe not luck, maybe destiny.

Thanks, I felt like the words spinning in your head really resonated with the concept.  Glad you liked the night switch up - we had no idea how it would turn out when we filmed it!  Just crossed our fingers smile

Glad it was your favorite!  I actually really appreciate that there was a duality from the “hell yeah!” to the more introspective sensitivity.  That actually proved the point of the song, a surface emotion, and another one, underneath.

Thank you!!!!!!

We need to do a beat tape one of these days!
I also can’t believe that I can come up with new ideas - I try not to think about it!  smile

I actually LOVE the sound of planes taking off so this is a quintuple compliment, thank you!  glad you got into the “change up” - I love the idea of it being a reversal - like reversal film stock!

glad that all worked for you!  also, relieved to hear that the distortion was not fatiguing - i’m not sure what the secret is, but I know there are some metal albums that are just easier to get through than others.  Not sure how the pros do it!
