I find it super humorous that you're talking about how you want to rush out a song, meanwhile you're recording a behind the scenes doc on top of making your music video lol. I think it's super cool too how it transitions right into the music video when you turn the camera.
This gives me old-school Beck vibes with that bassline (nice new strings btw). The guitar also evokes the same feeling. I feel like that melody reminds me of something but I have no idea what, but it sounds excellent here in the track.
Also, I don't know why, but I tried to make vaporwave too (in 2020) and I also did not make vaporwave, why is it so elusive? tongue
Question: I'm thinking about making some videos myself. What kind of lighting equipment are you using for your videos? And do you have a dedicated camera? I was thinking of judt using my phone camera (already have been for my videos, just been lacking good lighting and haven't built a makeshift set for framing my videos)

Lol! Watching you work and try to explain your changes is stressful in the best way!

This was my favorite video of yours so far. Loved hearing your process as you went through it. Song turned out great! Trumpet would have been a great addition, too. Keep it up!

all my respect to your work on WB. you are a real pioneer and hero. wish more of us could manage to offer this kind of video presentations, but not everyone has such an eclectic workflow like you have. the song this week is sweet and sounds oldschool. thanks buddy.

Love your videos. Charging from them a little. I wish I could execute on a plan so well.

That was a great vid!

And your space wasn't THAT messy at all!!!

I do have to do a lot of work on my garage so it is better.

You are an absolute madman, but it's truly impressive. It was really fun to see the "making of" video and the track turned out great!

Seeing you work is so magical. I like how you start speaking with how you're caring for your mental health, and then your music proves you've got it well-managed big_smile
Especially how you mention all that about 'control', but in your process, you don't necessarily 'need' to have every little thing go exactly like you first envisioned, and then the music turns out so sunny and uplifting. Your Music Speaks Of A Life Lived With Such Excellence heart

Nice! Way to make the most of short time constraints. I'm liking the white noise perc pattern especially.
Say, this gives me an idea for 2-hours-18-minutes-lybeats in 2024. Alright folks, who's with me? tongue

this was a really cool observation of your process - on the subject of control...
watching you work made me feel like i was watching a whole mission control in your mind working all the parts of the song out - it's really something to observe Drew!  WOW!

listening back to the piece knowing your process was really fun on the 2nd listen - it's a great track!

Frank's scene at the end felt epic!   it was a nice visual adventure - what a pretty space for hiking!

Haha i love the concept. I got a Mission Impossible vibe from the video - doing ALL this within less than 3 hours. It was fascinating to witness the approach you have to making a track - thinking of the vibe, what instruments and types of sounds you have. And it's also good to have an idea of how much additional WORK making a video and editing it may require. This is MADNESS. Cheers to madness.

The whole vibe of the video gave me a Hackathon vibe, trying to hack your way through something quickly, taking shortcuts, having ambition ideas at the beginning and then discarding them along the way. Also the way you wrote the melody for the guitar, by humming it made me laugh. That's the same way I come up with melodies and it's interesting how our natural voice influences the key we end up with (one of the reasons many of my tracks are in D).

The resulting track is really good! The marriage of the nintendo arps, funky bass and alternative rock guitar was not necessarily obvious on paper, but you made it work.

Take care of yourself, take it easy, don't burn out but i'd lie if I said I am not looking forward to your weekly videos and tracks.

cool to get some insight into your creative process! agree with ViridianLoom's comment: getting some Beck vibes from this in the best way.

Really enjoyed the peek into your (rushed) creative process. Definitely have to second Kedbreak on the idea of taking it easy. I think sometimes it's okay to look at weeks as cheat weeks. This is probably easy for me to say because sometimes I just upload a guitar recorded on my phone, but I think what you're doing will, over time, have more of a patchwork rug feel to it - it's going to be this fantastic mish-mash of you, your music, and your life that will tell a much bigger story and sing a much bigger song than any one week in particular.

This feels so good, just like forgiveness does.

I leave a good selection of instruments set up ready to go all the time as I find that helps with time and creativity.  As far as work life, less is definitely more if that's an option.  smile.  Just don't burn out doing these weekly challenges please!  Be sure to keep the creative process an enjoyable thing.  This is why I have breaks after extended stretches of creativity as it really helps to come back fresh and enthused.  I think you need some video slaves above all else.

Really enjoyed that bassline and how it grooves with the crunchy beats.  Even more so when the guitar melody comes in.

I rocked out to this and loved the chip to Orange Drink transition, but the video's absolutely a highlight in this ORANGE DRINK DVD SPECTACULAR (if you're not reading these in chronological order, this comment makes no sense -- tldr I'm watching your videos in a row, see にほんりょうり comment for moar context).

Did you plan the time-lapse of the song making to time-lapse of the basement cleaning or did you "accidentally genius" in this?

Thanks everyone!  I’m trying to catch up!

Thanks for the Beck comparison, definitely one of my biggest influences.

I think vaporwave is about finding a musical discarded artifact, but it’s hard to make something, discard it, and then find it?  But how can you find something when you already know where you put it?  I mean, I know I’m talking metaphorically, but I feel like it’s closer to the heart of the matter, rather than drum kits or whatev. (I made another vaporwave attempt this week!)

I’m not really using any lighting equipment most of the time?  I bought a studio lighting kit, but that’s not really the best kind of thing for videos.  I have my one little LED color changing light, and that should be obvious when that’s in play.  I do have a dedicated camera, a Sony ZV-1, but I don’t have a smartphone or a phone that has a camera.  I would say if you want to upgrade, figure out how much money you want to spend first - current smartphone video camera quality is insane these days.  Getting two little flexible desk lamps can actually go a long way in lighting a performance or something!  Let me know how I can help though!  The WB approach is basically make lots of videos and improve something 1% each time through.

It kinda made sense when I was saying but then watching it back it was like HUH???

Thanks Blighters!  Thanks for continuing to be a Trumpet Cheerleader!  I owe you some trumpet lines, I haven’t forgotten!

Dang, calling me a hero, don’t make me cry.  Thank you so much Q.  Wow.  Your support (and the WB family) keeps me going.  YOU are a pioneer and hero!  You’re an incredible musician yourself.  Geez.  *tears of joy*  thanks.  I’ve been a solo act for a really long time and I always wanted the support of band members.  Thank you for giving me the support that I’ve been looking for. heart

LOL it looks a lot worse in person than it did on video.  I agree, it was anti-climactic about “THE HUGE MESS” and it’s like, just 4 tangled cables.  lol.  Thanks for watching!

My imagination gets the best of me and then halfway through I’m like, WHY AM I DOING THIS.  lol  I do it for the WB fam I guess!  We are all insane for doing all these projects smile

RAJA stop making me cry with every comment.  This is too kind.  UM it’s not that well managed because I’m super stressed out and my food and sleep is a nightmare, BUT thank you.  I’m doing my best.  “A life lived with such excellence” - I don’t think I’m deserving of that accolade, but I appreciate that you can see that I’m trying.  That’s all I want, not to be perfect, but just to try and share my passion and hopefully inspire others.  Thanks bud.

I’m IN!  Thanks, the white noise was done with the MidiNES and then turning the sample knob to select different noise samples as the pattern ran through.

Thanks so much for all of your interest and your time investment!  LOL, I’m like a crazy mission control, AND the rocket AND the astronaut drifting in space like, “um, how do we get back?”

I wanted to add a Frank scene, and it felt good to do something that contrasted the fast, indoor footage, with slow, outdoor footage!

It was like mission impossible!  I needed a bomb timer, that would have been hilarious.  Yeah, the editing on this video was probably the worst of the whole year, OOPS.  All for a “quick little song” *shrug*

Yeah, I hum a lot of my melodies, but the few times that I’ve written vocal melodies on the keyboard are when I’ve written things that “went against” my normal tendencies.  Kind of cool that way.

I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THIS YEAR IS OVER!

ZIRAFAAAAA thanks for watching - happy to be in Beck territory of course!

Thanks Hent!!  I need to learn how to relax, but I’m discovering I have NO idea how to do that.  I can’t wait to be done with this and look at the thing as a whole - to see the patchwork rug finally!  I keep trying to do cheat weeks, and this video was supposed to be “easy”!!  This current week was also supposed to be easy, using archival footage, but became a HUGE technical disaster with importing/exporting VHS tapes!  I apparently like to make everything difficult :-)

Thanks for tying that back into the title!  Miss you buddy, I appreciate your forgiveness with my tardiness on listening to your work and my absence on the calls!

I can’t wait to outsource EVERYTHING to AI Robots in the near future smile  I am really burning out, but am so stubborn I will limp my way past the finish line!

I agree about the variety - I think the genre/instrument variety of Orange Drink keeps it very fun and interesting and exciting for me.  Sometimes my imagination creates more work than I can handle, but this is my first year doing video - I’m slowly learning how much time certain ideas take, in the same way that WB has taught me about how long it takes to make a certain type of song.

Thank you Lord Matrix!  The new bass guitar strings are making me think/play a different way.  I love it.

So I ended up not doing a real timelapse (where a camera takes a still photograph every X seconds) but a fake one where you take video footage and speed it up.  I didn't arrange the song that day, so I had no idea how long the song would be.  So I filmed the cleaning, then had the idea to film Frank's section, then had the idea that Frank's section would start when the tambourine came in.  THEN took the cleaning footage and sped it up so it would last as long as the song MINUS the tambourine section.

*exhausted sweaty emoji*

All is forgiven, we're not much on weeklymeets ourselves either.

Great video, love how the new ideas keep coming to you as you go along, it’s very rewarding hearing the finished song at the end as you take us on the journey to complete it.
