A Way Away

By orangedrink on June 14, 2020 9:52 pm

I played drums, baritone guitar, electric guitar, tambourine, and also sang on this piece.  One mic on the drum kit using kevanatkins' "Crotch Mic" technique smile Tried to go back to punk roots on this one.  I spent a lot of time on the lyrics and am particularly proud of the line, "In my free time I'm learning to pray" as the song presents an idea of being murdered, and I like the idea of someone bleeding to death in a ditch cheerfully saying, "In my free time I'm learning to pray! smile "

I referenced philosopher George Berkeley (I feel like this is not the first time) - his "immaterialism" argument is that the only things that exist are minds and ideas.  This is a take off of Descartes' "I think, therefore I am".  So my reference is that if you are being murdered for what you believe in, the idea of what you believe in, can't be killed.  So, in this story, I wrote this song, and then I got murdered, but the song will still exist after my death, and the ideas that are in the piece, thereby representing me, will still exist and will also never die.  So killing me to suppress my spirit is a futile effort.  Music/Art is my "way away" to transcend not only the material world, but also arguably the worst of human nature - violence, hate, etc.

"Minds and ideas can't be covered in blood"

UH - we've gone this far, let me just write what I think about all the lines then smile "Left for dead with a self-destruct button" is kind of like a take on disingenuous attempts to help someone.  Trapped in a well?  Here's a 50 pound brick to help you get out.

"Drinking my blood and then I'm spitting it out" is an idea that insecurity and self-hate can beget unkindness towards others.  Drink your own poison, and then try to poison others.  But it could also be refusing to believe the poison, and trying to get rid of it.

"If they never stop talking you forgot what you had to say" and "A loss for words only in my mouth" is about being silenced.  You know how you feel, you just don't know how to say it, and then you've not been listened to for so long, you forgot how to speak/what to say.

OK thanks for letting me share in many ways!  I love you all heart

I FORGOT TO POST THE FULL LYRICS:

Here we are again isn’t it something
Left for dead with a self-destruct button
A loss for words only in my mouth
Drinking my blood and then I’m spitting it out

In my free time I’m learning to pray
If they never stop talking
You forgot what you had to say

Carry on, I will,
A way away

I’ll rot away but not for nothing
If you’re reading these words then I guess that’s something
I’m buried in dirt and I’m stuck in the mud
Minds and ideas can’t be covered in blood

In my free time I’m learning to pray
If they never stop talking
You forgot what you had to say

Carry on, I will,
A way away

I like the raw rocking quality of it.  It reminds me of some of the stuff I liked listening to in the '90's.  Musically it could fit on Pavement's Westing (By Musket and Sextant).  I appreciated reading your thought process behind the lyrics also.  I do think part of the creative urge is to live beyond ourselves and achieve a form of immortality.

Bringing out the acoustic drum kit. Fuck yeah.

Garage rock. Diggin the raw feeling to this.

Dig this return to punk roots. The drums came out great with that single mic... trashy and powerful.  And those smashy guitar and drum hits at the end are killer!  Jealous of that tone!!!!  I had to listen through the end like 5 times.  Would steal that sound if I could smile Your lyrics (this song and others) have pulp noir quality. Good story telling that matches up with the energy of the song. Faved!

Never stop impressing us, great track, can’t believe you put this all together in one week, great vibe and lyrics.  I also appreciate your explanation of the lyrics as everyone will have their own interpretation of them, which is fine but nice to know what you are trying to express.

The guitar makes it feel like surf punk? The lyrics are punk AF though, it's got that rebellious spirit.

This sounds awesome, orange. And do you know what? I had to think of the band (!!!) the police, the way you sang and played. This was megagood. But the pavement comparison is not bad, as well.

Super cool song, the ending with the bright guitar and slapback verb is super bad ass sounding too. Also the message behind the lyrics is cool, the line "In my free time I'm learning to pray" is powerful. I initially took it as the idea that everything is hopeless right now and that a lot of us are spending our downtime reading about how messed up the world is and praying it'll get better haha. It's cool how there can be multiple interpretations of music, especially if your intent was different

1. Great crunchy drum sound (what is the mic crotch technique???). Need more punk OD in my life
2. I feel like it's been a while since we chatted about philosophy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Big ups to the cartesian subject

The drum sound you got there is great. I love that it sounds real, like in rehearsal situations. I'll have to remember the mic crotch technique. The bass has a nice tone there too.
Cool old root punk vibe, digging it!

Love the old punk feel it has right away and the sound of the drums even more.  Excellent lyrics too that fit perfectly with the vibe of the track.  On, I will, a way away!

Oh man! That drum beat! Love the single mic setup. Sweet guitar arpeggio thing going on too. Really dig the whole piece!
