Spokes

Lots of family and work things going on this week, but I found some time for a (hopefully) hypnotic little track.  All MIDI instruments in Live: Impulse (acoustic kit--though that isn't heard directly, hand claps), Drum Rack (MPC), Analog (drone and pad), Electric (melody and bass), Tension (Zheng), and Collision (Vibes).  The impulse kit went through the vocoder to play the Analog synth (a tweaked version of Space Pad with a couple LFOs on the filter cutoff and resonance). Everything got M4L Humanizer and Auto-pan as usual, along with Full Chain Master.

The vocoder synth channel got loud occasionally, when the resonance went up.  Otherwise, apart from the usuals, not much is going on in-line. Sends: two convolution reverbs (smaller chamber and very large space), filter delay, and that Max/MSP modulation delay network from last week.

Title comes from the 24 spokes of the Ashok Chakra.

In retrospect, I'm not happy with the way the Rhodes, synth, and Zheng get crowded in this arrangement, so I've uploaded a slightly cleaned-up version here: https://soundcloud.com/onezero/spokes

No need to be unhappy about anything, imho. I love the way the synth works with the beat. Love these slowbeat jams! Great work.

Liking the looseness of the jam without it being sloppy. Nice vibe.

It is a hypnotic, head nodding, good groove. Love that bass and the Zheng, great sounds. I like it when the drums drop out then come back in with what seems like stronger drone, or maybe I just noticed the drone more then ... drones are the secret ingredient!

Thank you!  I do think it builds up a bit in the mids on some systems.  (Just heard last week's and the one from three weeks ago in a real control room, and it was...enlightening in terms of the mids.)  But yeah, I do love me some slowbeat jams.

Thank you!  The key is using Max Humanizer with a maximum delay of about a dotted 64th note. (I pulled it back a bit, but it's still out at the edge, really.)

Thank you!  There is One in Drone.

The song exudes a wide from. Perfect filmscore!
