Jetta

With this week involving rehearsals and a performance with a new instrument in a new tuning, as well as figuring out how best to tweak it (setup, nut height, fret dressing, neck shim...), this piece is a bit of a retrenchment on a familiar instrument, the hollow Univox in Bb F tuning. This involved two short sessions Friday night and Saturday night, and came out surprisingly up-tempo.

The air is still humid, but temperatures are slightly cooler, so there's a bit of fret buzz on this instrument (as well as the new one). In the interests of working quickly, I've left it in place rather than re-tracking. (I should tweak the setup on this, too, though.) This uses the usual signal chain: UA Volt 1, convolution reverb, audio effect rack with default compression/eq on the stereo mix.

The title comes from minor planet 544 Jetta, which is a pretty teeny thing, cosmologically.

guitar tone sounds beautiful digging the tuning - really nice!

Thank you, Emily! I've had these strings on for a long time. Generally I like dead strings, but I'm wondering if I should restring, or maybe tune up a half step for a bit more, uh, sparkle.

This is a jam.  Really great mix, each part has is spaced out on the sound stage very nicely... This piece reminds me something the German poet Goethe wrote to describe string quartets, saying it's like "listening to four rational people conversing among themselves."  This has very much the same quality.  Very well done.

Wow--thank you! That's quite a compliment!

Thank you, jwh! There's a confidence coming from the tempo and the way those rhythm parts feel. It surprised me Friday night when I recorded the first chordal accompaniment!

Wicked vibe here, the production really works too. Awesome!
