Detuned Dream

By onezero on December 14, 2014 7:16 pm

With business travel this past week, I didn't think I'd have a lot of time to work on something, so my initial plan was to do a bunch of sine wave drones.  They're in there--specifically, a bunch of intervals used in La Monte Young's The Well-Tuned Piano, as an echo of my opportunity to return to the Dream House this week.  Then I found myself playing my $25 fretless guitar (see week 43), at first a bit like a sarod, so I threw in some tabla samples in loops that sounded right when they were one beat short. To anchor it, I added some Analog-synthesized kick, snare, and closed high hat.  For impact, I added a line of single-hit real trap kit samples, and tracked some bass, then Electric (piano), both of which I had to detune to work with the fretless--kind of the opposite of well-tuned, oddly enough.  There's something a little weirdly distorted in there from my converter occasionally getting fuzzy, but I might have mitigated that.  Then I went back and retracked the fretless guitar, and here we are.

A thousand million times YES. I absolutely love the vibe and just overall feel and sound of this piece.  This is an immediate favorite. The bass is just amazing.

$25?

Thank you!  That's a hell of a compliment!

Not too far off--this one's a cheapie, but it was made from some plywood (so the builder tells me), surplus electronics, and parts of a broken 12-string acoustic.

I traded a pedal for it, but the listed price was $25.

love the bass on this!

A pretty meaty sounding bass.  Love the sound of that cheap fretless.  Nicely executed.

smooooooth!

Thank you!  The bass signal chain was P pickup of an 80s Epiphone P/J into a Focusrite Scarlett, 2.51 compression, and Amp simulator starting with the Bass (Sunn) preset, with bass boosted and presence boosted a lot.  There's a lot of string-against-fret rattle from having tuned down, but I hear now on the little laptop speakers that it gives the bass some definition on the tiny speakers.

coming back to this song again and god damn do I love it. Downloaded and going into my everyday.

was meaning to comment on this track the other week so bookmarked it!  really loving it still a few weeks later smile

High praise!  Holy mackerel.  Thank you, Brian!  (I do think I hit a vibe with this one.  Thank the fretless!)
